Operation Yellow Ribbon was Canada’s response to the closure of U.S. airspace on September 11, 2001: aircraft bound for the United States were diverted to Canadian airports. Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador, received 38 of those planes, and its residents and neighboring communities helped care for the people aboard. It was one local welcome within a much larger national aviation operation.
What was Operation Yellow Ribbon?
After the September 11 attacks, the United States closed its airspace to civilian aircraft. Canada’s Operation Yellow Ribbon coordinated the diversion of flights to airports across the country, where passengers and crews could disembark and find shelter while air travel remained disrupted. The operation involved national transport coordination, airports and communities—not Gander alone. Transport Canada’s retrospective describes the work of regional personnel and airport operators; a Department of National Defence account places Gander among the communities that received diverted flights.
The scale depends on whether an account is describing Canada as a whole or Gander specifically. The Prime Minister’s 2026 anniversary statement counts 224 planes at 17 airports nationally, while the Department of National Defence says more than 33,000 passengers aboard hundreds of diverted flights found refuge across Canada. Those are national figures, not counts for Gander. The Prime Minister’s statement and the Defence account describe the figures in their respective national contexts.
Why did so many planes land in Gander?
Gander was one of the Canadian airports used to receive diverted aircraft. Its location and airport made it a practical landing point for flights that could no longer continue to U.S. destinations. The operation was coordinated across Canada; Gander’s role was to receive a substantial share of the aircraft and the people aboard them. The Transport Canada retrospective explains the broader diversion effort, while the Royal Canadian Air Force’s history of 9 Wing Gander includes the base’s support during Operation Yellow Ribbon.

How many people were stranded in Gander?
Accounts use different totals and degrees of rounding, so there is no single figure that should be presented as an exact count without qualification. Historica Canada says 38 planes carried 6,656 people. The Prime Minister’s 2026 statement describes nearly 7,000 stranded people, and Newfoundland and Labrador’s provincial account also uses 7,000. These are attributed descriptions of the Gander arrivals, not interchangeable exact totals. Historica Canada’s account, the Prime Minister’s statement and the provincial account present those figures.
For context, Gander’s municipal history gives its population at the time as 9,651. The Prime Minister’s statement rounds the town’s population to 10,000. Either way, the influx was large enough to nearly double the local population. The Town of Gander’s history page provides the municipal figure.

What happened after the passengers landed?
Landing the aircraft was only the beginning of the local response. Passengers needed places to stay and practical support while flights were grounded. Gander and nearby communities in Newfoundland and Labrador welcomed the arrivals. The distinction matters: the national operation concerned the diversion and coordination of aircraft, while the hospitality story belongs to the people and communities who received those passengers. The province’s account describes the welcome, and the Royal Canadian Air Force history of 9 Wing Gander records the military base’s role.
In its 2026 visit report, the Governor General’s office praised 9 Wing Gander for helping thousands of diverted passengers find safety in Newfoundland and Labrador. That recognition underscores the base’s contribution without collapsing it into the larger community response. The Governor General’s report describes the military support.

How does Come From Away tell the story?
Come From Away, written by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, is a musical retelling of the stranded passengers’ arrival and the Newfoundland and Labrador communities that welcomed them. The provincial government presents it as the story of 7,000 passengers and their hosts; the official production page identifies Sankoff and Hein as the writers of the book, music and lyrics. A musical can bring individual experiences to life, but it dramatizes events. For the mechanics and scope of the national aviation response, use official histories such as Transport Canada’s account. The provincial description and the official production page provide context for the show.

Jim DeFede’s nonfiction book The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland focuses on the community and diverted travelers. It is a natural next step for readers interested in the town-level story rather than only the national operation. Library records list a physical edition with ISBN 9780060559717, and Google Books’ listing describes the book’s focus on the community response.
