Spoilers for all three Season 5 premiere episodes. The season opens with the suspicious death of Arconia doorman Lester, adds the killing of mob-linked Nicky Caccimelio, and sends Charles, Oliver, and Mabel beneath their building to a hidden casino. By Episode 3, police corruption and three billionaire suspects deepen the mystery—but none of the new murders is solved.
What happens in Episodes 1–3?
Season 5 launched on September 9, 2025, with three episodes. Disney described the season’s conflict as a collision between old-school mobsters, powerful billionaires, and the Arconia’s residents. (Disney’s announcement)
Episode 1: Lester’s death and the hidden casino
Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short), and Mabel (Selena Gomez) begin investigating Lester, their longtime doorman, after his death is officially treated as accidental. The circumstances soon make that explanation look doubtful. A second death enters the story when Nicky Caccimelio, a figure connected to organized crime, is found dead.
The trio also discovers a secret underground casino beneath the Arconia. It links their building to the season’s underworld story, though the discovery does not by itself explain who killed either man.

Episode 2: Lester’s life at the Arconia
A flashback-focused episode follows Lester’s years working at the Arconia and his relationship and marriage to Lorraine. Through his perspective, the building’s history brings familiar figures back into view, including Teddy Dimas and Sazz Pataki.
New evidence suggests an elevator crank may have been used to stab Lester. That detail makes the accident ruling harder to accept, but it is a new lead—not a complete solution to his death.

Episode 3: The investigation reaches powerful suspects
The inquiry into Nicky’s death expands into a story about entrenched power. By the end of the episode, the trio learns that people behind the murder have bought off police. The story introduces three wealthy figures as suspects: Camila White (Renée Zellweger), Bash Steed (Christoph Waltz), and Jay Pflug (Logan Lerman). Episode 3 leaves their guilt unproven and the case unresolved.
Why Lester’s story changes the season’s mystery
Lester’s death is personal to the Arconia’s residents, while Nicky’s killing points toward a broader criminal and political network. The premiere episodes place those threads alongside the casino discovery, but do not establish exactly how the deaths connect. The distinction matters: a suspicious death, a possible murder weapon, and a corruption revelation are clues, not a final account of who did what.

What the casino and flashbacks add
The casino gives the season a concealed space inside a familiar setting, while Episode 2 uses Lester’s memories to make the building’s past part of the investigation. Co-creator John Hoffman told TVLine, “There were a couple of options that we talked about, but [the casino] felt key to where we were going.” He also discussed the flashback episode as a way to show the building and its history from Lester’s point of view. (Hoffman’s TVLine interview)
