Hollywood supplies a clever, crowded detour, but the return to the Arconia restores the show’s familiar pleasures. The season is back on track in its character chemistry and comic rhythm; its mystery is less consistently focused.
What Season 4 is about
After Charles’s stunt double and close friend Sazz is shot in his apartment, Charles, Oliver and Mabel investigate who was meant to be killed. The case takes them to Los Angeles, where a studio is preparing a film adaptation of their podcast, then back to the Arconia and the residents of its West Tower. That route sets up the season’s central contrast: a story about the trio being interpreted by Hollywood, followed by a murder investigation rooted in the building and its inhabitants.
The Hollywood actors include Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria and Zach Galifianakis, playing versions of the podcasters for the film. The wider guest cast also includes Meryl Streep, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Molly Shannon, Kumail Nanjiani, Melissa McCarthy and Richard Kind. The abundance of recognizable faces is part of the joke—and a real test of how much room the central trio can retain.
Does the season feel back on track?
The return to Sazz and the Arconia gives it a strong center
Sazz’s death gives the season a more personal point of entry than the film-adaptation conceit alone could provide. The question of mistaken identity fits the show’s interest in performance and doubles: Sazz has spent her life standing in for Charles, while actors now follow the trio to prepare to play them. The parallel gives the Hollywood material thematic purpose rather than making it merely a celebrity parade.

More importantly, the investigation comes home. The West Tower residents and their rivalry with the East Tower bring back the enclosed social world that made the Arconia mysteries engaging in the first place. TheWrap highlights both the Hollywood excursion and the return to the building, and considers the season a successful whodunit. That balance—outward expansion followed by a home-building case—is the clearest reason the season can feel reoriented.
The familiar trio remains the season’s best anchor
Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez still make the series work as a comic ensemble. Their different rhythms give scenes a center even when the season introduces another actor, suspect or resident. TheWrap praises the ensemble, humor and Martin’s performance; Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus likewise stresses the show’s continuing comic appeal. The season’s self-aware jokes about turning a podcast into a movie are most effective when they sharpen the trio’s relationships rather than compete with them.

The mystery sometimes gets crowded by its own premise
The season’s multiplying doubles, stand-ins and new faces also make its central case harder to keep in view. Lili Loofbourow’s Washington Post review sees an intriguing but potentially unnecessary attempt to revisit plot holes from Season 1 in pursuit of greater mystery rigor. That review was written before critics had seen the final three episodes, so it should not be read as a judgment on the finale.
Other criticism reflects the same trade-off from different angles. Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus calls the season more metatextual and full of famous faces, while selected excerpts include both praise for the cast and a complaint that the talent and goodwill are poorly used. Metacritic excerpts praise added heart and the leads’ chemistry but also raise concern that cameos and new characters dilute the focus. These are snapshots of differing views, not proof of unanimous critical agreement.

Who is likely to enjoy Season 4?
Viewers who come for the Martin–Short–Gomez dynamic, the show’s comic tone and its eccentric building residents have good reason to continue. The season gives those elements room again after its Los Angeles stretch, and Sazz’s connection to Charles adds emotional weight to the case.
Viewers looking primarily for a tightly streamlined puzzle may be less satisfied. The Hollywood adaptation plot and enlarged ensemble are integral to the season, not brief side notes; the same abundance that fuels its jokes can distract from the murder’s construction. If the series’ self-aware detours are part of the appeal, the sprawl is easier to forgive.
