Spoilers for the Season 4 premiere. “Once Upon a Time in the West” sends Charles, Oliver and Mabel to Hollywood for a film adaptation of their podcast, but the trip cannot distract Charles from Sazz Pataki’s disappearance. A hole in his window, blood in his kitchen and no body at the scene leave the central question unanswered: what happened to Sazz, and where is she?
What is the title of Season 4, Episode 1?
The official title is “Once Upon a Time in the West.” The premiere opens with a stylized, largely wordless sequence that places Hollywood alongside the Arconia. Although the trio has not yet grasped the full implications of what happened to Sazz, signs of violence at Charles’s apartment point toward a shooting: a hole through the window and blood in the kitchen, but no body. The missing body becomes the mystery beneath the episode’s Hollywood detour. The production script identifies the episode as Season Four, Episode One, written by John Hoffman and Joshua Allen Griffith; because it is a draft, aired-scene details are cross-checked against the episode recap.

Why do Charles, Oliver and Mabel go to Hollywood?
A studio wants to adapt the trio’s true-crime podcast into a movie, bringing them to Los Angeles. Oliver is taken with the opportunity, while Mabel questions what signing away life rights could mean for her and how a film might portray her. Their different reactions give the offer a personal edge: the adaptation is not just a chance to see their podcast made into a movie, but a question of who gets to tell their stories. An episode-specific interview discusses the adaptation and Mabel’s concern.
While in Los Angeles, they visit Sazz’s apartment. Packages left outside her door suggest she has not come back. At the studio event, the movie’s cast is revealed:

The casting turns the trio into the subject of a Hollywood production even as they are still trying to understand a real and immediate danger. Charles stays focused on Sazz’s absence while Oliver and Mabel engage with the film opportunity.
How does the Hollywood story connect to the Arconia mystery?
The Hollywood visit is a change of setting, not a break from the murder story. Showrunner John Hoffman described the season’s approach to TheWrap this way: “I loved the idea of establishing the Hollywood world in Episode 1 and letting the Hollywood world infect the New York world and the Arconia.” TheWrap interview frames the juxtaposition as a deliberate creative choice. The film deal brings satire and questions of representation into the story, while the Arconia remains the place where Charles’s personal mystery waits.

What happens at the end of the premiere?
The trio returns to Charles’s apartment, where the window hole and traces of blood keep the focus on what happened there. Sazz’s body is still missing, and the episode leaves the apparent murder scene altered rather than explained. The ending sharpens the question of how someone could remove a body from the apartment—and what that means for Charles—without resolving either one.
