Pope is really Rex Bailey, the former stunt performer Sazz Pataki mentored—and the person who killed her. Rex stole Sazz’s screenplay for an Only Murders in the Building movie and feared she would expose him. The Season 4 finale, “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” which aired October 29, 2024, reveals how that theft became a murder and resolves the season’s central timing puzzle.
Who killed Sazz Pataki?
Rex Bailey killed Sazz. He had been using the name Marshall P. Pope as a screenwriter, taking credit for a script Sazz had written. Episode 9 had brought Rex into the investigation; the finale fills in his identity, motive, and route through the Arconia.
Why did Rex kill Sazz?
He stole her screenplay
Sazz was Charles’s longtime stunt double and close friend. She had also written a screenplay for an Only Murders movie. She had not yet taken it to Charles because she wanted his permission before shopping it around, and she trusted Rex enough to show him the draft. Rex copied the script and passed it off as his own under the name Marshall P. Pope.
He wanted to protect the career he had taken
Rex had once worked as a stunt performer and was mentored by Sazz. After an incident on Project Ronkonkoma ended his stunt work, she encouraged him to return to writing. He envied her talent and believed her script was better than his own work. When Sazz discovered the theft and set out to tell Charles, Rex feared losing the writing career built on her work—and chose to silence her. The finale makes the betrayal personal as well as professional: Sazz had helped him, and he exploited her trust.

The murder also carries a particular weight for Charles. As Jane Lynch described Sazz’s role, stunt doubles call the person they double their “number one”: Sazz saw herself as someone who protected and supported Charles. Her final message, “tap in,” draws on that bond and signals that she trusted him to take over the investigation.
How did Rex kill Sazz and get rid of her body?
Rex fired at Sazz from the Dudenoff apartment. The finale’s explanation of the short window between the shot and the events in Charles’s apartment depends on the building’s exterior ledge: Rex crossed it to reach Charles’s apartment. Sazz had survived the initial wound, so Rex finished the attack there, then pushed her body down the trash chute into the incinerator.

That ledge crossing is the practical answer to the season’s timing puzzle. It also explains how the killing involved two apartments without requiring the killer to make an ordinary trip through the building.
What happens to Rex, and why does Jan shoot him?
During the finale’s confrontation, Mabel keeps Rex talking by engaging with his writing while Charles and Oliver look for a way into the apartment. Rex gets a gun and threatens the trio. Jan, who has secretly remained in the Arconia and is waiting for them to solve Sazz’s murder, shoots him through the window from Charles’s apartment.

Glen’s death is separate from Rex’s motive for killing Sazz. The finale’s screenplay-theft explanation accounts for Sazz’s murder; it does not make Glen’s hospital death part of that same motive. The two deaths should not be treated as one event or explained by the screenplay theft alone.

Sofia asks about her missing husband
Sofia Caccimelio approaches Charles and Mabel for help finding her husband, Nicky, saying his disappearance is connected to the Arconia. They initially decline because their work is investigating murders in the building.
Lester is found dead
After Sofia’s approach, the trio find doorman Lester dead in the courtyard fountain. The finale does not establish whether Lester’s death is connected to Nicky’s disappearance. Both are unresolved threads, not a confirmed single case.

Showrunner John Hoffman said before the finale aired that the emotional relationship between Sazz and Rex was intended to fit clues laid across the season. In the episode’s reveal, that relationship explains why Sazz trusted Rex—and why the screenplay theft made her a threat to him.
