The episode presents the moment as an apparent death, but its official synopsis describes the attack and the message rather than making a formal declaration that Vegapunk is dead.
What happens in One Piece episode 1142?
The Japanese title is 「応答せよ、世界 ベガパンクのメッセージ」, approximately “Come In, World — Vegapunk’s Message.” It aired in Japan on September 7, 2025, and is part of the Egghead arc. The episode’s sequence makes the personal violence against Vegapunk inseparable from the message that follows: the attack happens, then his broadcast begins across Egghead. - Caribou tries to convince Blackbeard Pirates Van Augur and Catarina Devon that his knowledge of the Ancient Weapons will be useful to Blackbeard.
- At Egghead’s coast, Marines and Pacifistas continue fighting. Vice Admiral Doberman orders Bonney killed, and Vice Admiral Tosa moves against her.
- Dorry and Brogy arrive with the Giant Warrior Pirates.
- Sanji entrusts Vegapunk to Luffy, who faces Saint Saturn. Kizaru then pierces Vegapunk, and the message begins.
Does Vegapunk die in episode 1142?
The episode depicts Kizaru dealing Vegapunk an apparently fatal blow. The official episode synopsis confirms that Kizaru pierces him and that Vegapunk’s message begins immediately afterward, but it does not explicitly label the event a death. The distinction matters: the scene strongly frames the moment as a possible death, while the listing alone does not establish a definitive medical or narrative status.
Why the moment matters—and how it echoes Marineford
Calling Vegapunk “the most important character since Marineford” is an interpretation, not a ranking established by the episode listing. The comparison is still useful as a way to describe the scene’s narrative function: a major character appears to fall during a conflict, while the consequences extend beyond the immediate fight. Here, the message’s reach gives the moment its larger scale. Rather than ending with the blow itself, episode 1142 pivots toward what the world is about to hear.

Anime episode 1142 is not manga chapter 1142
The matching numbers can lead to a mistaken search result. Anime episode 1142 is the Egghead installment about Vegapunk’s message. Manga chapter 1142 is a separate installment titled 「わたしのこわいもの」, approximately “What I Fear,” and Shonen Jump+ dates it August 21, 2025. VIZ also lists a separate manga chapter 1142. The chapter number is not evidence that it is the source chapter for the anime episode. Shonen Jump+ chapter 1142 listing · VIZ One Piece chapter listing

The official listing credits the screenplay to Shinzō Fujita (藤田伸三), direction to Atsuki Yamai (山井淳生), and animation direction to Eisaku Inoue (井上栄作). It also lists One Piece manga volume 109 among the related comics. That volume is an optional collected-manga route for readers who want to explore the Egghead material in print; it is not the episode itself or a required companion. VIZ’s series page also displays collected volumes and a “Wano to Egghead” box set. Official One Piece episode listing · VIZ One Piece series page
