Luffy’s Gears are distinct ways of using his rubber body in combat, not simply a ladder of stronger forms. Gear Second emphasizes speed, Gear Third enlarges body parts, Gear Fourth combines inflation with Haki in specialized forms, and Gear Fifth is an awakened transformation with an unusually expansive, playful fighting style.
What are Luffy’s Gears?
The Gears are combat techniques and transformations that change how Luffy applies his abilities. Their mechanisms and uses differ, so calling them successive “power levels” misses what makes each one distinct. The summaries below describe the broad concepts; fine mechanical details are best checked in the relevant licensed manga or anime scenes.
Gear Second: increased speed
How it works
Gear Second is associated with increased blood flow, which helps Luffy move and attack faster, according to Crunchyroll’s 2023 overview. The guide-level description is useful for distinguishing the form, but does not establish every mechanical detail or drawback.
Gear Third: enlarged body parts
How it works
In Gear Third, Luffy inflates parts of his body to make them much larger. The resulting oversized limbs give the form a visibly different combat emphasis from Gear Second’s speed focus. Crunchyroll’s overview summarizes its mechanism as air-inflated enlargement.

Gear Fourth: inflation combined with Haki
How it works
Gear Fourth combines inflation with Armament Haki; Crunchyroll’s overview also associates it with Gear Second’s increased blood flow. Rather than one uniform appearance, Gear Fourth includes distinct forms. Official One Piece listings document a Gear 4 Leo Bazooka figure and a Boundman figure, reflecting two named forms in licensed merchandise: Leo Bazooka and Boundman.
Story debut
Crunchyroll’s guide identifies Gear Fourth’s manga debut as chapter 784 and its anime debut as episode 726. These are secondary-source references, rather than a substitute for the story itself.

Gear Fifth: an awakened, expansive fighting style
How it works and what it looks like
Gear Fifth is an awakened transformation. Its combat style is notably free and physically expansive: in the official synopsis for anime episode 1072, Luffy bounces from the ground, grows enormous, uses Kaido like a jump rope, and keeps fighting after taking damage. The synopsis describes the episode’s events rather than providing a full technical explanation of the transformation.
Story debut and related chapters
Crunchyroll’s guide lists Gear Fifth’s manga debut as chapter 1044 and anime debut as episode 1071. The official episode 1072 page gives a broadcast date of August 13, 2023, and connects the episode to volume 103 and chapters 1036–1046. The series’ official English-language manga catalog is available from VIZ.
