After Richard Simmons died on July 13, 2024, actor and comedian Pauly Shore remembered him as “one of a kind.” The tribute came amid disagreement over Shore’s proposed film about Simmons: Simmons had publicly said he never gave permission for it.
What Pauly Shore said about Richard Simmons
Shore posted: “You’re one of a kind, Richard. An amazing life. An amazing story. They broke the dolphin shorts when they made you. Rest in peace, my friend. Rest in peace.” The message was a posthumous tribute, not an indication that Simmons had approved Shore’s film.
Did Richard Simmons approve Pauly Shore’s biopic?
No. In a January statement quoted by Fox News, Simmons said: “You may have heard they may be doing a movie about me with Pauly Shore. I have never given my permission for this movie. So don’t believe everything you read.” That is the clearest public statement in the available reporting about his position on the proposed project.
What was disputed about Shore’s account?
In August 2024, Fox News reported that Simmons’ brother Lenny said Richard had authored his own social-media posts and had not texted, emailed, or called Shore to wish him luck. Lenny’s statement said Richard had not contacted Shore “with anything; not even to wish him ‘Good Luck’ as Pauly has stated many times.” Fox News reported that a Simmons representative confirmed the statement’s authenticity. This later account disputes Shore’s claim of encouragement; it does not change Simmons’ public statement that he had not given permission for the movie.

Richard Simmons’ fitness legacy
Simmons was a fitness instructor and motivator for more than 40 years, according to Sky News. The outlet reported that his website listed 65 fitness videos and more than 20 million copies sold. The sales figure is attributed to Simmons’ website as reported by Sky News, not to an independent sales audit.
