In Netflix’s 2024 series One Day, Ambika Mod plays Emma Morley and Leo Woodall plays Dexter Mayhew. They meet on the night of their University of Edinburgh graduation on 15 July 1988; the 14-episode story revisits that date as they grow older. This guide is about the series, not the separate 2011 film starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess.
Who plays Emma and Dexter in One Day?
- Ambika Mod as Emma Morley (Em): Emma is a studious English major who hopes to make a difference in the world around her. Director Molly Manners describes her as funny, intelligent and guarded, with humor she sometimes uses defensively.
- Leo Woodall as Dexter Mayhew (Dex): At university, Dexter is a charismatic playboy from a privileged background. The series follows the changes in his life alongside Emma’s.
Their first meeting takes place on graduation night in Edinburgh. Netflix’s production guide identifies the University of Edinburgh’s Old College as the setting for that meeting.

How does the series tell Emma and Dexter’s story?
Each episode takes place on 15 July, with Emma and Dexter one year older in each successive installment. Rather than showing every event between those dates, the series selects moments from their lives; major developments may happen off-screen. Netflix Tudum lists 14 episodes, each 20 to 40 minutes long. Netflix’s episode descriptions identify the opening installment as 1988 and the next as 1989.

No. The 2024 Netflix limited series is an adaptation of David Nicholls’s novel. The 2011 feature film is a separate adaptation, starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. The series credits Nicholls as an executive producer; Nicole Taylor is its creator and lead writer, and Molly Manners is its lead director.
The series premiered on 8 February 2024, according to Netflix Tudum. Netflix UK currently lists the title, but availability, rating and subscription details can vary by territory and change over time.
