Olivia Culpo was Maxim’s number-one honoree on its 2019 Hot 100, and the magazine featured her on the cover of its July/August issue. The feature drew headlines saying she “posed nude,” but the available descriptions of the previewed shoot focus on sheer, fashion-oriented outfits rather than establishing explicit nudity.
What Maxim announced
Maxim published its interview with Culpo on June 10, 2019, presenting her as the top honoree on that year’s Hot 100. The magazine identified her as the cover star of its July/August print issue, which it said would go on sale June 18. The feature was written by Thomas Freeman, with photography by Gilles Bensimon. Read Maxim’s original feature.
Culpo told Freeman that the recognition was something she had dreamed about since childhood and called it “really humbling.” She also reflected on supporting other women: “I thrive off the success of other women because a win for one of us is, in my opinion, a win for all of us.”
What the “posed nude” headlines describe
Contemporaneous coverage used “posed nude” in its headlines, including Cosmopolitan’s June 11, 2019 report. Its descriptions of Culpo’s Instagram previews specify a sheer robe, a fringe bodysuit, thigh-high boots, a sheer skirt, stilettos and a floppy beach hat. Those details describe previewed looks; they do not establish that every image in the magazine used those outfits or that the images showed explicit nudity.
