More than 100 people attended a Perth gathering for Ocean with David Attenborough at Luna Palace Cinema in Leederville, hosted by Minderoo Foundation, according to PerthNow’s event coverage. The photo feature names guests including Minderoo co-founder Nicola Forrest, cinematographer Tom Park and Sea Shepherd Australia managing director Jeff Hansen.
When and where was the Perth premiere?
PerthNow’s event report, published May 15, 2025, documents the gathering at Luna Palace Cinema in Leederville and says it coincided with David Attenborough’s 99th birthday. Minderoo Foundation’s May 6 announcement separately listed a Perth premiere Q&A screening at Luna Leederville for May 8. The available accounts do not fully explain how that advertised screening relates to the gathering in the later photo coverage, so the dates should not be treated as confirmation of a single event.

PerthNow reported more than 100 attendees; that is the publication’s estimate, not an independently audited count. Minderoo Foundation hosted the premiere, according to the event report and the foundation’s own announcement.
Who was pictured at the event?
PerthNow identified Minderoo co-founder Nicola Forrest, cinematographer Tom Park and Sea Shepherd Australia managing director Jeff Hansen among the people attending. The gallery is a social record of the gathering, rather than a comprehensive guest list.

Forrest described the film as “It’s more than a documentary – it’s a wake-up call,” PerthNow reported. She also said: “Long-form storytelling through film speaks to us in a unique way. It has the capacity to cut through, it can create movements for change and even trigger cultural shifts.” Park said it was surreal to hear Attenborough narrate his footage and called him an idol who had inspired generations.

What is Ocean with David Attenborough about?
The documentary pairs images of ocean life with a message about the possibility of recovery, while addressing threats including bottom trawling, coral bleaching and warming seas, as described in PerthNow’s coverage and Minderoo Foundation’s announcement. Minderoo defines bottom trawling as towing a net along the ocean floor to catch target species, and links the film’s discussion of coral bleaching to rising ocean temperatures.
Minderoo’s release quotes Andrew Forrest describing the ocean as “the life support system of our planet.” That is his statement about the project’s subject, not an independently sourced scientific finding. Nicola Forrest said the foundation was supporting the film because it believes arts can help create opportunities to improve the world.

Who made the film?
The film was directed by Toby Nowlan, Keith Scholey and Colin Butfield, with Nowlan also credited as producer. Conscious Living’s announcement names Silverback Films and Open Planet Studios as co-producers and lists Minderoo Pictures among the associated organizations. Minderoo Foundation said its Pictures company supported the documentary as part of its impact-film work.
In May 2025, Minderoo announced planned later-year availability on National Geographic, Disney+ and Hulu. That announcement does not confirm where the documentary can be watched now; current availability should be checked with the services or the film’s official distributor.
