If the YouTube stream-key field is blank in OBS after you reconnect your account, first check whether OBS is using YouTube’s account-linked integration. That workflow is separate from manual stream-key entry, so an empty manual-key field may be expected—not proof that your key was erased. To enter a key yourself, switch to the manual YouTube RTMPS setup and copy the key from YouTube Studio.
Why the stream-key field can be blank
OBS offers two distinct ways to connect to YouTube: link a Google account through OBS’s YouTube integration, or enter a stream key manually. OBS documents account linking in its YouTube streaming guide. If the account is connected, the manual-key field may not be part of the selected workflow.
The available guidance does not confirm a current OBS defect specifically triggered by reconnecting a YouTube account. First identify which connection method you want to use, then follow the matching steps below.
Choose your YouTube connection method
| Method | What you do | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Account-linked YouTube integration | Link your Google account in OBS and use OBS’s YouTube integration and broadcast controls. | You want OBS to work through the linked account rather than manage a key in the settings field. |
| Manual stream key | Copy a key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and enter it in OBS’s YouTube RTMPS/manual-key setup. | You want to supply and manage the stream key directly. |
YouTube describes a stream key as the credential and destination information that lets the encoder send a feed and YouTube accept it. Keep it private, as you would a password. See YouTube’s stream-key instructions.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Fix the blank field in OBS
- Open OBS’s stream settings. Go to Settings → Stream. Check the selected service and whether YouTube is connected as an account. OBS labels and screens may vary by version.
- Decide which workflow you want. If you want account-linked setup, keep the account connected and use OBS’s YouTube integration. You may not need to paste a key into the manual-key field. If you specifically need a key field, select the YouTube RTMPS/manual stream-key route instead.
- Check the active profile. OBS profiles save Stream settings, including connected-account information. Confirm that the profile currently selected is the one you expect. OBS documents exporting and importing profiles as a way to back them up or use them elsewhere: OBS Profiles.
- For manual setup, copy the key from YouTube Studio. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, open the Stream tab, and copy the value under Stream key. In OBS, paste that value into the manual-key field for YouTube RTMPS.
- Reset the key only if necessary. In Live Control Room, use Reset beside the hidden stream key, then replace the old key in OBS with the newly generated one. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a key; editors and viewers cannot. Resetting invalidates the old key for your encoder, so update OBS before trying to stream.
- Test the selected setup. Start the stream from OBS and check YouTube Live Control Room for the incoming feed. If the stream starts but reports errors, use YouTube’s guidance to update the encoder and inspect encoder errors and the outbound connection: YouTube encoder troubleshooting.
If disconnecting the account does not reveal the field
An OBS forum user reported in 2023 that disconnecting the linked account made the manual-key box appear. This is an anecdotal possible workaround, not a guaranteed fix for current OBS versions. If you try it, return to Settings → Stream, select the manual YouTube RTMPS route, and check whether the key field is available. OBS’s integration guide describes account linking but marks its integration section as work in progress and references OBS Studio 27.1 and newer, so its screenshots may not match your current interface: OBS YouTube integration guide.
Avoid these common mistakes
- Do not paste the stream URL into the key field. The ingest URL and stream key are different values. Copy the key itself from YouTube Studio.
- Do not reset the key just because its field is hidden. First establish whether OBS is using account-linked or manual-key setup. A reset is useful only if you need a new key or the existing one is no longer usable.
- Do not troubleshoot the wrong profile. A different active OBS profile can have different Stream settings and account state.
- Do not assume reconnecting erased the key. The blank field alone does not establish that; it may simply reflect the account-linked workflow.
When to contact support
If you log in through third-party software without using a stream key, YouTube advises contacting the streaming software provider. For a feed that starts but encounters errors, check YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance and the outbound connection before escalating. If your OBS screen still differs from both documented workflows, include your OBS version, active profile, selected service, and whether the YouTube account is connected when asking OBS support for help.
