OBS YouTube Stream Keeps Disconnecting: Settings to Check

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your OBS YouTube stream keeps disconnecting, first check whether OBS is reporting rising dropped frames and whether YouTube’s stream health reports an ingest or encoder problem. Lower an unsustainable bitrate, verify the required output settings, then isolate network-path causes such as Wi-Fi, VPN software, or the router. A disconnect alone does not prove OBS is at fault.

Start by identifying what is failing

During a test stream, watch OBS’s dropped-frames counter and connection indicator, and check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. Rising dropped frames alongside a yellow or red OBS connection indicator points to an unstable connection to the streaming service or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream. The OBS Project says, “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames,” in its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide dated 2024-09-30. That is not a claim that software can never cause a disconnection; it means the connection between your computer and the ingest server is an important place to investigate.

OBS connects to the streaming platform; the OBS Project does not provide the stream server. YouTube’s stream-health messages add a separate view of what is reaching its ingest service. If viewers report buffering but OBS shows no dropped frames, the problem may be on the viewer playback or network side rather than an encoder-to-ingest disconnect. See the OBS Help Portal.

Check bitrate against upload capacity

A bitrate that your connection cannot sustain can cause dropped frames and intermittent disconnections. OBS suggests lowering the video bitrate and gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting estimate—not a guarantee of stable, sustained upload. YouTube also recommends testing upload bitrate and choosing a stream quality that remains reliable on your connection.

Use YouTube’s figures as encoder recommendations, not as a promise that your internet connection can upload at those rates. The table below selects common targets from YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance. Its page does not display a publication date; the figures were verified on 2026-10-03.

Output H.264 minimum H.264 recommended AV1 or H.265/HEVC minimum AV1 or H.265/HEVC recommended
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps 4 Mbps 12 Mbps

Compare your configured bitrate with both the connection’s stable upload capacity and the YouTube target for your actual resolution, frame rate, and codec. If you are unsure whether the connection can hold the current bitrate, reduce it for a representative test and see whether dropped frames stop increasing. A lower resolution or frame rate may also let you use a sustainable bitrate.

Verify YouTube’s encoder settings in OBS

  • Rate control: Use CBR for YouTube RTMP or RTMPS streaming.
  • Keyframe interval: Set two seconds. YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says it should not exceed four seconds.
  • Codec and output: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs, up to 60 fps. Confirm that OBS’s codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate match the stream you intend to send.
  • Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS.

Changing several settings at once makes it harder to identify the cause. When testing, change one relevant setting at a time and note whether the OBS counter or YouTube stream health changes.

Run a representative test and read stream health

  1. Start a test stream before the event with audio and motion similar to the planned program. YouTube recommends testing under representative conditions.
  2. In OBS, note the dropped-frames counter and connection indicator. Record when the counter begins rising or the stream disconnects.
  3. In YouTube Live Control Room, monitor stream health and read any messages during the test.
  4. Use the message to direct the next check. YouTube or its API documentation identifies warnings for excessive bitrate, long keyframe intervals, unsupported video configuration, and insufficient incoming video. Review Google’s live-stream health-status messages, last updated 2026-09-14 UTC.

A bitrate or keyframe warning calls for an encoder-setting check; a message about unsupported configuration points to codec or output settings. An insufficient-video warning means YouTube is not receiving enough video. Compare the platform message with OBS’s dropped-frames behavior rather than treating every warning as a network fault.

Isolate the network path methodically

Try a different ingest server

If the service offers another server choice, test it and compare the dropped-frames counter and stream health with the original. A change in outcome can help isolate a route or server-path issue; it does not by itself identify the exact fault.

Check OBS network settings

In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network and confirm Bind to IP is set to Default. OBS lists IPv4 Only as a diagnostic option. Test it if needed; if it makes no difference, return to IPv4 and IPv6. On Windows, test the available network optimization and TCP pacing options one at a time.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

OBS’s dynamic bitrate adjustment can lower bitrate during congestion and may reduce dropped frames. It does not fix the underlying connection problem, and the stream’s quality can fall while bitrate is reduced.

Temporarily isolate networking software

  • Test with VPN software disabled.
  • Firewall or antivirus software can interfere with a stream. If a controlled test identifies it as the cause, add an OBS exception, then re-enable protection.
  • Check whether bundled network software is deprioritizing OBS. OBS also suggests checking network drivers from the computer or motherboard manufacturer.

Use temporary tests to identify a cause; do not leave security protection disabled as a workaround.

Compare Wi-Fi with wired Ethernet

OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. If you suspect Wi-Fi, test over Ethernet and compare results. A cable, modem, router, network card, switch, or extender may also be faulty. Isolate suspect equipment before replacing it; buying hardware is not a general fix for every disconnect.

Troubleshoot by symptom

What you observe Next check
Dropped frames rise and OBS’s indicator turns yellow or red Lower the bitrate to a level the connection can sustain; compare upload stability, try a different server, then test wired networking and isolate network software.
YouTube reports excessive bitrate or a long keyframe interval Check OBS’s bitrate and set the keyframe interval to two seconds, not above four.
YouTube reports unsupported video configuration Confirm the codec, resolution, and frame rate are supported and match the intended output.
YouTube reports insufficient incoming video Check that OBS is sending video consistently, then compare OBS connection status and dropped frames with the YouTube message.
Viewers report buffering, but OBS shows no dropped frames Do not assume the encoder-to-ingest connection is failing; investigate viewer playback or network conditions.
Disconnects continue after encoder checks Test another server, network connection, or isolated software setup, changing one variable at a time.

What to send your ISP if the problem persists

OBS recommends contacting your ISP if connection troubleshooting does not resolve dropped frames. Give the ISP specific symptoms and test conditions so it can investigate the route and service. Keep a short record of:

  • Disconnect timestamps and how long each test ran.
  • Whether OBS dropped frames were rising and what its connection indicator showed.
  • YouTube’s stream-health messages.
  • Whether you used Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and whether another server or network changed the result.
  • The bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and codec used in each test.

Or let it run in the cloud
