First determine whether the media source stopped playing or OBS lost its connection to YouTube. They are different failures: source playback settings can restart or loop a clip, while a dropped stream connection calls for network and broadcast-state checks. Use the recovery steps below in that order.
Identify which part failed
Watch OBS when the problem happens. If the source preview goes blank but OBS still shows that it is streaming, investigate the source. If OBS reports dropped frames or an intermittent disconnection, investigate the connection to YouTube’s ingest server. OBS describes dropped frames as a sign of a connection that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide was dated September 30, 2024.
- Source failure: The clip or media URL is not loading or playing, while the stream output remains connected.
- Connection failure: OBS is dropping frames or disconnecting from the ingest server. Restarting a media source does not repair this connection.
- Broadcast-state issue: OBS may reconnect differently depending on the YouTube broadcast state. Check YouTube Studio before assuming the same broadcast can be resumed.
Recover a built-in OBS Media Source
These controls apply to OBS’s built-in Media Source, not automatically to every browser, camera, or third-party source. OBS’s Media Sources guide documents the following playback behaviors.
- Check the source’s file or URL. Open the source properties and confirm that the local file path is correct or that the media URL is still valid. Test playback before relying on it in a live scene.
- Enable “Restart playback when source becomes active” if the clip should restart when shown. This is a source playback behavior: it does not restart OBS’s stream output if the stream disconnects.
- Enable “Loop” if the file should repeat after it finishes. Looping addresses the end of a clip, not a failed load or YouTube connection.
- Use “Close file when inactive” only if unloading a hidden source is useful. OBS may take a short time to reload the file when the source becomes visible again, so a brief period without video is possible.
Recover a VLC Video source
VLC Video is a separate OBS source type with playlist support and a VLC-library dependency. VLC must be installed for the source to appear; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Do not assume that the built-in Media Source’s visibility and playback controls work identically for VLC Video. Confirm the playlist and test the source in the scene before going live. If OBS lost its connection to YouTube
OBS’s documented connection troubleshooting concerns the path from your computer to the remote ingest server. Try the following checks rather than changing source playback settings:
- Test another server or service. This can help establish whether the problem is specific to the selected ingest destination.
- Lower the bitrate in relation to stable upload capacity. A bitrate that your connection cannot sustain can contribute to dropped frames or disconnections.
- Consider dynamically changing bitrate during congestion. OBS notes this may reduce quality and does not fix the underlying network cause.
- Check security software and VPN effects. Temporarily investigate whether either affects OBS’s connection.
OBS also documents automatic reconnect as a stream-connection control in its Studio Overview Guide. It is separate from “Restart playback when source becomes active,” which controls media playback. Do not treat the latter as a reconnect setting.

Check YouTube Studio before resuming
After an output interruption, inspect the current broadcast in YouTube Studio before trying to resume it. OBS’s YouTube integration text includes a warning that an auto-stopped broadcast cannot be reconnected, as well as a message for when YouTube is not receiving stream data. The available documentation does not establish a universal reconnect time window; the next step can depend on the broadcast configuration. OBS’s English locale strings are on the current repository branch, not a version-pinned release.
Capture details if the problem persists
A more specific diagnosis depends on what is failing. Before seeking support, record the exact source type, OBS version, error text, and YouTube broadcast state, and capture an OBS log. These details help distinguish a local file or URL issue from a VLC dependency, a network disconnection, or a broadcast that YouTube has stopped.
