First determine what “crashed” means: OBS may have closed, OBS may still be open while YouTube disconnects, or OBS or the whole computer may have slowed or frozen. Those symptoms point to different causes. After a failure, preserve the session log and any crash log before changing settings; then use the logs and a controlled test to narrow down the cause.
Identify what failed
At the next incident, note the time and what you saw. Did the OBS process disappear? Did OBS stay open while the YouTube stream stopped or show dropped frames? Did the preview lose frames, memory or CPU rise, or did the entire computer become unresponsive? These distinctions matter: a process crash, a network interruption, and a performance freeze are not interchangeable diagnoses.

Save the logs before changing settings
OBS’s crash guidance recommends using the latest crash log and preserving session details. In OBS, open Help → Log Files → Show Log Files. Save the regular log for the affected session and the latest crash log if OBS produced one. Avoid making a batch of changes first: doing so can remove clues or make it harder to tell which change mattered.
- Write down the failure time and whether OBS closed, the stream disconnected, or the system froze.
- Record the OBS version, operating system version, GPU, and graphics driver version.
- List relevant plugins and note whether the stream used a scheduled or existing YouTube broadcast.

If OBS itself closes
Read the crash evidence
Compare the crash log with the final entries in the regular session log. Look for a source, plugin, driver, or subsystem active near the failure. A line near the end can guide investigation, but it is not automatically proof of the underlying cause.
Test whether the configuration is involved
Try OBS Safe Mode where available, or create a clean profile and scene collection. If the clean setup runs differently, add the original components back gradually: plugins, scripts, browser sources, filters, and scene elements. Test after each meaningful addition so the result can identify a trigger more clearly.

A scheduled-broadcast report opened August 3, 2026 describes a separate failure: OBS 32.2.1 on Windows 11 reportedly exited seconds after starting an existing YouTube broadcast, with a final message involving YouTubeStreamCheckThread. That individual report is not evidence for the cause of a crash after several hours. Compare any similar log detail with your own version and session evidence; see the individual OBS issue report.
If memory or CPU rises before the freeze
Track memory and CPU over the session, noting when growth begins and which scenes and sources are active. A steady rise is a useful clue to investigate, not proof that OBS has a general memory leak. The reviewed sources establish no universal memory threshold for this symptom.

- Start with the scene collection and sources active when the increase begins.
- Reduce scene complexity, then test browser and media sources individually or in smaller groups.
- Where the evidence points to performance pressure, simplify output or lower the canvas resolution and retest the same workload.
- Compare the resource trend and stability across tests, changing one class of source or setting at a time.
OBS’s encoding performance guidance recommends leaving resources available to OBS and discusses configuration changes such as lowering canvas resolution. These are diagnostic and configuration steps, not guaranteed crash fixes. An individual report opened May 28, 2026 describes rising memory and CPU, lower FPS, and eventual unresponsiveness with a complex scene on Debian Trixie and OBS 32.1.2; it is an anecdote, not a diagnosis for other computers. If OBS stays open but YouTube disconnects
Investigate the connection between your computer and YouTube’s ingest server rather than treating a dropped stream as an OBS process crash. OBS Project says: “If you experience dropped frames or intermittent disconnections while streaming, there is a network issue between your computer and the remote stream ingest server.” (OBS Project, Stream Connection Troubleshooting, September 30, 2024.)

- Check whether the upload connection is stable enough to sustain the selected bitrate.
- Review the bitrate and, where relevant, try another ingest or server selection.
- Check whether a VPN or security software is interfering with the connection.
- Use the session log to see whether the failure is recorded as dropped frames or disconnection while OBS remains open.
Follow OBS Project’s stream connection troubleshooting guide for the network path. A short successful retest is not enough to confirm a fix for a failure that normally takes several hours to appear.

When a change appears to help, repeat the same kind of stream, scenes, and sources for long enough to cover the usual failure window. Keep a note of what changed and when. Do not call the issue resolved just because a brief test succeeds; intermittent failures need a comparable long-session test.
