If your YouTube stream goes offline just after an OBS scene change, first find out whether the playlist source stopped or the broadcast itself disconnected. A playlist can pause, stop, or restart when its visibility changes; that alone does not mean OBS stopped sending video to YouTube. Reproduce the switch while recording locally, then compare the recording, OBS Stats and log, and YouTube Live Control Room’s incoming-stream status. Those checks point you toward the source, encoder, rendering load, or network without guessing at a cause you have not confirmed.
Separate a playlist interruption from a stream disconnection
A scene is a collection of sources used in OBS’s output. Switching scenes changes what is active in that output, but a failure in one source is not automatically a failure of the YouTube broadcast. Check the two states separately: what OBS is outputting and what YouTube says it is receiving.
- Only the picture or sound changes: the playlist or another source may have paused, stopped, reloaded, or become hidden while OBS continued streaming.
- OBS reports a disconnect or reconnect, or its bitrate and dropped-frame indicators change: investigate OBS’s output and the connection to the ingest server.
- YouTube Live Control Room reports that it is not receiving data: the incoming stream has stopped reaching YouTube, even if the local preview still appears normal.
OBS’s connection guide says dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect a stream. That points toward the computer-to-ingest connection, not necessarily the playlist source. OBS: Stream Connection Troubleshooting
Reproduce the scene change and record what fails
Capture a local recording
Start a local recording, reproduce the same switch to and from the playlist scene, and note the time if anything fails. Review the recording afterward: did the video freeze or go black, did audio disappear, or does the recording remain intact while the YouTube stream went offline? A local failure makes the source, plugin, rendering, or encoding path more important to investigate. If the recording stays healthy while YouTube stops receiving the stream, focus on the outgoing connection and broadcast state.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Watch OBS and YouTube during the test
Keep OBS Stats and YouTube Live Control Room visible while reproducing the switch. Note whether OBS disconnects or reconnects, whether its bitrate falls or dropped-frame count rises, and whether YouTube says it is receiving data. Record the scene and time of the switch so you can compare them with the OBS log. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also directs creators to check the encoder’s picture and sound, encoder errors, and CPU load before testing outbound internet connectivity. Check the playlist source’s visibility and playback settings
First establish which source type the scene uses. OBS documents both a regular Media Source and a VLC Video source that supports playlists. Their settings are not interchangeable, and a source’s playback behavior does not establish that the stream output disconnected.

If it is a VLC Video source
- Inspect Visibility Behaviour. This controls whether playlist playback continues, pauses, or stops when the source is hidden. OBS documents stopping while not visible and restarting when visible as the default behavior.
- Inspect Loop Playlist. It controls whether playback starts again after the playlist reaches its end; it does not control whether YouTube’s broadcast remains online.
If it is a regular Media Source
- Check Restart playback when source becomes active to see whether playback is intended to start again when the source becomes active.
- Check Close file when inactive. OBS says this unloads the media while inactive and can cause a short delay when the source is shown again.
Change one relevant setting at a time, repeat the same scene-switch test, and compare the local recording and stream status. That makes it easier to tell whether a playback change explains the visible interruption. OBS’s documentation for these options is in OBS: Media Sources.
Test a minimal scene to isolate the trigger
- Keep the same stream setup, but test with a simple scene that does not contain the playlist, browser overlays, or third-party plugins.
- Switch scenes and monitor the recording, OBS Stats, log, and YouTube receiving state as before.
- If the problem occurs only with the more complex scene, add or enable its sources and plugins individually, repeating the test after each change.
This is a controlled way to isolate a scene or source, not proof that any particular source is at fault. OBS’s overview describes scenes as arrangements of sources for the output; it does not imply that every scene change should disconnect a stream. OBS: OBS Studio Overview Guide

Use the evidence to choose the next diagnostic branch
| What you observe at the failure | What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Local recording also freezes, goes black, or loses audio | The problem is present in the local output path as well as, or instead of, the YouTube connection. | Check the source settings and test a minimal scene. Inspect the log for encoder errors or rendering and encoding lag. |
| Local recording remains healthy, but OBS shows dropped frames or disconnects | Investigate the computer-to-ingest connection and whether it can sustain the configured bitrate. | Inspect the OBS log around the recorded time and follow OBS’s network diagnostics. |
| OBS appears healthy, but YouTube reports missing incoming data | The encoder’s local appearance does not settle what reached YouTube. | Compare the OBS output state with Live Control Room and test outbound connectivity during a reproduction. |
| The failure follows one scene or source; a minimal scene works | A source, plugin, or workload unique to that scene may be involved. | Reintroduce elements one at a time while recording and checking the log. |
| The failure also occurs with a minimal scene | The playlist is less clearly implicated; the issue may be elsewhere in output, encoding, or connectivity. | Use the log, Stats, YouTube receiving state, and outbound connectivity test to narrow the path. |
Read the OBS log and investigate the connection
After reproducing the issue, inspect OBS Stats and the log around the exact time. Look for output disconnects or reconnects, dropped frames associated with connection stalls, encoder errors, and rendering or encoding lag. Match those entries against the local recording and YouTube’s receiving status rather than treating a scene switch and a disconnect that happen close together as proof of cause.
If the output and local recording remain healthy but OBS shows network-related dropped frames or YouTube stops receiving data, test outbound connectivity. YouTube recommends an outbound internet speed test and contacting the ISP if it identifies a connection problem. OBS also suggests checking network configuration and possible VPN or security-software interference. A speed test by itself does not establish that the route to YouTube’s ingest server is stable, so compare connection indicators during a reproduced incident where possible. OBS’s guide says, “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” That statement concerns dropped frames; it does not mean OBS can never have any kind of streaming failure. Without the source properties and log from the event, no single cause can be confirmed.
