OBS Studio is the better default for YouTube creators who want free, open-source software and detailed control; Streamlabs Desktop suits creators who prefer setup guidance and built-in alerts, overlays, and widgets. Both support YouTube streaming. Your operating system, desired features, and how your own scene performs matter more than claims that one is universally easier or lighter.

OBS Project’s homepage lists OBS Studio 32.2.2, dated August 14, 2026. Check the OBS homepage for the current release and platform requirements. Streamlabs’ features and setup are described in its Desktop features, getting-started guidance, and system-requirements guidance; requirements and recommendations can change.
Choose OBS if control, openness, or Linux support matters most
OBS is a strong choice if you want to assemble a production around your own workflow rather than start from an integrated set of creator tools. Its documented features include scenes made from windows, images, text, browser windows, webcams, and capture cards; custom transitions; per-source audio filters; Studio Mode; Multiview; hotkeys; and support for plugins and scripts. That flexibility can suit a documentary channel that switches between narration, archival stills, maps, clips, and on-screen text.
OBS is free and open source. Its platform listing includes Linux as well as Windows 10/11 and macOS 13.0 or newer. If you use Linux, that documented platform support makes OBS the straightforward choice between these two products.

Choose Streamlabs Desktop if integrated creator tools fit your workflow
Streamlabs Desktop combines streaming setup with built-in alerts, widgets, themes and overlays, and an app store. Its documented onboarding includes account sign-in, a choice between free Starter and paid Ultra, the option to import OBS settings, theme selection, and adding camera, microphone, or capture sources before recording or going live. That guided, integrated approach may be convenient if those tools are part of your YouTube production; it is not evidence of a measured usability advantage.
Streamlabs says its basic features are free. Ultra is optional and includes benefits such as multistreaming, VIP support, and premium overlays; multistreaming requires Ultra. No current Ultra price is stated here, so check Streamlabs’ own plan details before subscribing. Streamlabs’ system-requirements article gives vendor guidance of at least 8 GB RAM and recommends 16 GB or more, along with processor, graphics, and storage recommendations. Those are guidelines, not a guarantee that a particular scene will run well.

What the shared OBS technology does—and does not—mean
Streamlabs’ public Desktop repository describes the app as built on Electron and OBS and says the project is powered by OBS. That indicates the products share OBS technology underneath, while Streamlabs adds its own application and creator-feature layer. It does not mean every feature or behavior is identical, nor does it determine which program will perform better on your computer.
Is Streamlabs easier, or does OBS use fewer resources?
Streamlabs’ guided onboarding and integrated widgets may reduce the need to assemble those particular pieces separately. Whether that makes it easier depends on what you are setting up and how much customization you want; a comparable usability test is not established.

There is likewise no controlled, current same-hardware comparison here that establishes that OBS or Streamlabs always uses less CPU or memory. The workload depends on the computer, sources, browser overlays, filters, output settings, and what else is running. If performance is the deciding factor, test your actual scene in both apps rather than relying on a universal “lighter” claim.
How to make the choice for your YouTube channel
- Check your operating system. On Linux, use OBS based on its official platform listing. On Windows or macOS, both are options, subject to their current requirements.
- List the tools your show needs. If scenes, filters, scripts, and plugins are central, start with OBS. If built-in alerts, overlays, themes, and widgets are priorities, try Streamlabs Desktop.
- Decide whether multistreaming is worth paying for. Streamlabs requires Ultra for multistreaming; OBS is free and open source. Confirm Streamlabs’ current plan terms before deciding.
- Test with the real production scene. Use the same sources and output settings, then check preview smoothness, dropped frames, audio, and CPU and memory use on your computer. Change one setting at a time so you can identify the cause of a problem.
Keep a YouTube stream running when your computer is off
OBS and Streamlabs are desktop production applications. If your goal is instead to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, a cloud service is a different kind of tool: it runs the playback without leaving your streaming computer on. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
