OBS vs FFmpeg for a 24/7 YouTube Livestream of Children’s Stories

OBS suits visual scene production; FFmpeg suits command-driven playback. Neither guarantees 24/7 reliability: configure YouTube correctly, test the full stream, monitor it, and plan recovery.

Choose OBS Studio if you want to build and supervise a story show visually; choose FFmpeg if your broadcast is a fixed media sequence you can configure and monitor through commands. Neither has been established as the more reliable 24/7 option. Continuous operation depends on testing the full stream, monitoring it, and preparing for interruptions—not just picking an encoder.

OBS vs FFmpeg: which fits your story stream?

Decision OBS Studio FFmpeg
How you work A graphical application for capturing, compositing, encoding, recording, and streaming. A command-line media tool for specifying inputs, processing, and outputs.
Best fit A show that combines story artwork, scenes, overlays, or live voice input, and benefits from a preview and visual controls. A prepared recording or repeatable sequence whose playback and output can be described in a command or script.
What you must manage Scene and source setup, encoding load, stream status, and the computer and connection running OBS. Input and output options, command or script behavior, encoding load, stream status, and the computer and connection running FFmpeg.
Evidence about 24/7 reliability No controlled comparison or sustained-use result establishes a reliability advantage. No controlled comparison or sustained-use result establishes a reliability advantage.

These are workflow differences, not performance-test results. OBS describes itself as software for recording and live streaming; FFmpeg documents a command-driven media framework. Your operating system, hardware, upload connection, scene complexity, and automation experience all affect the practical choice. OBS Studio project · FFmpeg documentation

Set the YouTube output before building the show

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends RTMPS. A 2-second keyframe interval is recommended and the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. Match settings to your actual resolution, frame rate, codec, and upload capacity rather than treating one preset as universal. YouTube encoder settings

Example output YouTube-published H.264 video bitrate Keyframe interval
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds

These video figures are YouTube Help guidance accessed in 2026, not a guarantee that a given internet connection can sustain a broadcast. For stereo audio, YouTube lists 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. Allow upload headroom above the stream bitrate and test with representative narration, music, and image movement; an unstable connection may require a lower output. YouTube encoder settings

Prepare the destination and key

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream in the Live Control Room and set its audience classification and other stream details.
  2. Use the stream key shown for that stream in the encoder. Treat it like a password: do not put it in a public post, screenshot, or shared command file. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
  3. Select RTMPS when the encoder supports it. Use YouTube’s ingest server and key together; do not share the key with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
  4. Before the public broadcast, start the encoder and confirm that the Live Control Room preview appears and reports a healthy incoming signal.

Set up a story stream in OBS

  1. Check capacity first. OBS notes that meeting basic system requirements does not guarantee the computer can stream at a particular resolution and frame rate. Encoder choice, scene complexity, resolution, and frame rate affect CPU load. Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard, then test the intended output on the actual computer. OBS system requirements
  2. Create a scene. Add the story artwork or video as a source. For an audio narration or music source, add the relevant input or media source. Arrange and preview the composition before streaming; avoid covering text or important story illustrations with overlays.
  3. Make playback repeat. For a prepared media file, enable looping in that media source if the story is meant to repeat. If you are presenting a sequence of separate stories, build and test the sequence so transitions, sound, and end behavior are intentional. Check that a file ending does not leave the scene blank or silent.
  4. Configure output. In OBS settings, choose the intended video resolution and frame rate, a YouTube-supported encoder, CBR, and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds. Set video bitrate using YouTube’s guidance for the chosen resolution and frame rate and what the upload connection can reliably sustain. Configure audio for a supported codec; YouTube’s listed stereo example is AAC or MP3 at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz.
  5. Connect the stream. In OBS stream settings, select YouTube if available or enter YouTube’s ingest details manually. Use RTMPS where supported, then enter the stream key from the Live Control Room. Keep the key private.
  6. Test before going public. Start the encoder, inspect the Live Control Room preview, listen to the complete audio path, and verify that the intended artwork and story are visible. Check stream-health messages before relying on the setup for an extended run.

OBS gives you a visual way to compose and inspect the show, but it does not remove the need to keep the computer, power, and internet connection operating. A local scene can also fail because a source was misconfigured, an input ended, or the machine became overloaded.

Run a prepared story file with FFmpeg

FFmpeg suits a fixed recording or repeatable media pipeline. The example below loops one file, reads it in real time, encodes 1080p/30 H.264 video at YouTube’s recommended 14 Mbps example bitrate for that format, and sends AAC stereo audio to an RTMPS ingest URL. It assumes the file has an audio track and that your installed FFmpeg build includes the H.264 encoder libx264.

Replace the example filename with your recording and set the environment variable to the private key from the Live Control Room. The shown RTMPS address is an example YouTube ingest endpoint; use the server address provided for your stream if it differs. The command’s 14 Mbps video setting follows YouTube’s recommended 1080p/30 H.264 figure accessed in 2026. Confirm that the connection can sustain it; for a different resolution, frame rate, or codec, consult YouTube’s current table instead of reusing the number. The GOP settings of 60 frames at 30 fps yield a 2-second interval.

  1. Confirm the input. Check that the file plays through its ending and contains the audio you expect. This example loops the entire input; it does not assemble multiple unrelated files into a playlist.
  2. Start privately or with an appropriate test setup. Run the command and check that FFmpeg reports no input, encoder, or connection errors. Confirm that YouTube receives the stream and that the preview shows both video and audio.
  3. Watch the process and destination. A command that is still running is not proof that the stream is healthy. Check FFmpeg output and YouTube stream-health messages, and listen and look at the actual broadcast.
  4. Plan command supervision. If FFmpeg exits or the host reboots, the stream stops unless an operator or a separately configured supervisor restarts it. Test restart behavior deliberately; do not assume that a shell session or a script alone provides recovery.

This example is a starting point for one file, not a universal 24/7 script. Filter chains, hardware encoders, multiple-file playlists, and files without audio need different command options and testing. No apples-to-apples hardware benchmark establishes whether FFmpeg or OBS can sustain a particular machine’s workload.

Make continuous operation an operational plan

YouTube’s live-streaming checklist recommends creating the encoder event at least 2 hours before the scheduled event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before it. For an always-on channel, adapt the same principle into a preflight and monitoring routine: establish the event and verify the complete signal before depending on it. YouTube’s checklist also calls for checking preview, failover, archives, accessibility, and ongoing audio/video quality. YouTube live-streaming tips

Preflight and monitor

  • Verify the correct story or playlist, artwork, narration, and music are playing, including after a loop or transition.
  • Check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages, then continue monitoring audio and video quality during the broadcast.
  • If recording an archive locally, check that the recording exists, plays, and grows as expected.
  • Check that the channel, watch page, and stream are accessible on the devices your audience is likely to use.
  • Rehearse the failure plan. YouTube suggests testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting Ethernet. Confirm what viewers see and how the stream is restored.

Choose recovery measures deliberately

A UPS, backup encoder, and network redundancy are optional continuity measures, not YouTube requirements. Decide who will receive alerts, who can restart a failed process, and whether a backup device or connection is available. The cited guidance gives operational recommendations; it does not promise 24/7 uptime. There is no established failure-rate comparison or continuous-use result here that makes either OBS or FFmpeg the reliability winner.

Account for children’s settings and content rights

Classify the stream accurately in YouTube Studio. On streams marked made for kids, YouTube disables live chat and live chat replay, comments on archives and upcoming streams, and reminder notifications. Personalized ads are disabled on made-for-kids live streams and Premieres, although contextual ads may still appear. These settings affect the audience experience and channel operations. YouTube says streams featuring minors under 16 who are not visibly accompanied by an adult may be removed or have live chat disabled. That rule concerns minors appearing in the stream; it does not automatically describe a prerecorded illustrated story with adult narration. Troubleshoot the most common failures

Symptom Likely cause to check What to do
YouTube receives no signal Incorrect or exposed key, wrong ingest address, unsupported connection setting, or encoder not actually running. Check the stream key and ingest details in the Live Control Room, use RTMPS if supported, and inspect OBS status or FFmpeg error output. Reset an exposed key.
Preview stutters or stream health degrades Upload capacity is insufficient or inconsistent, or the encoder is overloaded. Check YouTube health messages and the host’s CPU load. Test a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate that matches YouTube guidance and the connection; repeat the test before returning to a long run.
Picture works but narration or music is missing Wrong or absent audio source, muted track, or a file without an audio stream. Listen to the encoder preview and the YouTube preview. Check source routing in OBS; inspect the input file and FFmpeg output if using FFmpeg.
The stream turns blank, silent, or stops at the story ending The media source is not looping, a playlist ended, or an FFmpeg process reached end-of-file. Enable and test source looping in OBS. For FFmpeg, confirm the input is correct and that looping is configured for the input; the example command loops one file only.
Encoder disappears after a restart or outage The local computer lost power or network, or the encoder process exited without a restart plan. Rehearse recovery, assign monitoring and restart responsibility, and consider optional power, network, or encoder redundancy appropriate to the consequences of an outage.
Stream is restricted or taken down Possible copyright match or strike, or a policy issue related to how minors appear. Review YouTube’s notice and applicable stream rules; verify rights for the text, art, music, and recording before broadcasting again.
