OBS vs FFmpeg for a 24/7 Bhajan Channel on YouTube

OBS is the more approachable starting point for a fixed-layout bhajan stream; FFmpeg suits command-line operators. Compare workflows, YouTube settings, rights, and cloud playout.

For most solo creators running prerecorded bhajans with one steady visual, OBS is the more approachable choice. Its scenes and media sources are visible and configurable, and it can loop a local file or a playlist. FFmpeg can suit an operator already comfortable assembling and supervising a command-line media pipeline, but the available evidence does not establish that it is more reliable, stable, or efficient for a continuous broadcast.

Neither program makes a stream unattended by itself: the host computer, internet connection, and recovery plan still matter. If keeping a computer running is the problem, a cloud option is also available; see StreamNeo below.

What matters most for a continuous bhajan stream

Choose based on how you want to build and supervise the broadcast, not on an unsupported assumption that one encoder guarantees 24/7 uptime. A single prerecorded video with a fixed devotional image is a relatively simple playout job. A channel that needs changing scenes, titles, live camera or microphone sources, or other visual production benefits from a scene-based workflow.

Question Why it matters
Is the content one looping asset or a playlist? OBS documents both a looping local media source and a looping VLC playlist source.
Do you need to compose a visual layout? OBS organizes production through scenes and sources; that visible workflow is a practical fit for layered layouts.
Who will supervise failures? A reconnect setting is not a promise of uninterrupted service. Decide who will notice a stalled process, host, or connection and how it will be restarted.
How will you preserve the replay? YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Plan deliberately for longer sessions rather than assuming a 24-hour broadcast will produce a complete archive.

OBS: the straightforward default for a fixed layout

Why it fits prerecorded bhajans

OBS builds a broadcast from scenes and sources. Its media-source documentation describes looping a local media file; it also supports playlist looping through a VLC video source, which requires VLC to be installed. This gives a creator a graphical way to arrange a devotional visual and loop audio or video without composing a command line.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set up a basic OBS broadcast

  1. Prepare the media. Confirm that you have permission to stream the exact recording, performance, arrangement, artwork, and video you plan to use. Check the asset locally before scheduling the stream.
  2. Create a scene and add sources. In OBS, create a scene, then add the media source for the local file or the VLC source for a playlist. Enable looping for the chosen source. For a fixed visual, add it to the same scene and confirm that it remains visible during playback.
  3. Check transitions and sound. Play through a file boundary and a playlist transition. Watch the audio meter and listen for silence, clipping, unexpected gaps, or abrupt changes. A successful preview does not establish unattended reliability, so test representative material for a meaningful period.
  4. Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and obtain the server URL and stream key. In OBS stream settings, choose the YouTube service or enter the custom server and stream key. Keep the key private; anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
  5. Set the encoder and test. Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for codec, bitrate, keyframes, and transport (details below). OBS lists automatic reconnect among its advanced settings, but you still need to observe how the setup behaves when the network or source is interrupted.
  6. Start the broadcast and monitor it. Confirm that Live Control Room receives the signal and reports healthy stream status. Check sound and moving content, not just a static preview, before relying on the session.

See the OBS Studio Overview Guide for the documented scene/source and stream-settings workflow. OBS’s documentation does not promise that a computer-based setup will remain available indefinitely.

FFmpeg: for operators comfortable with a command-line pipeline

FFmpeg is the command-line alternative in this comparison. It may be appropriate if you already know how to configure a media pipeline, launch it on your operating system, inspect logs, and supervise process and connection failures. That is a workflow judgment, not evidence that FFmpeg uses fewer resources or delivers better uptime.

No FFmpeg command or exact loop and reconnect options are provided here. Those details depend on the build, operating system, input media, and intended behavior; verify them against documentation for the exact version you use rather than copying an unverified command into a 24/7 setup. Plan how you will detect a failed process, restart it, protect the stream key, and test loop boundaries before going live.

YouTube settings for video and audio

YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. It supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video up to 60 frames per second, and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. The recommended video bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so select the row that matches your actual output rather than treating one rate as universal.

For one concrete reference, YouTube lists 8 Mbps for H.264 at 720p30. That is YouTube’s published recommendation for that format, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain it. Choose quality to fit the stable upload capacity available to the encoder, then check Live Control Room stream health. YouTube recommends tests that include audio and movement similar to the intended stream.

  • Transport: RTMPS, using the server URL YouTube provides.
  • Bitrate mode: CBR.
  • Keyframes: every two seconds as recommended; never more than four seconds.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS, with an audible level and no unintended silence.
  • Resolution and frame rate: choose a format appropriate to the source and connection, and use YouTube’s matching bitrate recommendation.

These are platform recommendations, not a universal preset or a substitute for a real test of your media and upload connection.

YouTube eligibility, rights, and replay planning

Confirm the channel can go live

YouTube says live streaming requires channel verification and no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. First activation of live streaming may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until just before a planned broadcast. Follow YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and policy guidance; live content must comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.

Clear the particular recording, not just the song

A bhajan’s traditional or devotional status does not by itself establish that a specific recording is free to stream. Confirm rights for the sound recording, performers’ performance, arrangement, artwork, and any video with the relevant rights holders. YouTube’s general policy does not clear any particular asset. Copyright claims or restrictions can interrupt a broadcast or affect its availability.

Do not rely on a full archive of a 24-hour session

YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That published condition does not establish that a 24-hour session will be archived in full. If the replay matters, plan sessions and local preservation around the limit, and verify the resulting archive rather than assuming the live broadcast is a durable copy.

Choosing between the two

Use case Better starting point Reason and caveat
One video or playlist, one fixed devotional visual, and a preference for graphical controls OBS Its documented scenes, sources, and looping media features map directly to this setup. The host and connection still require supervision.
A custom pipeline managed by someone already comfortable with command-line media work FFmpeg may fit It may suit that operator’s workflow. No comparative reliability, resource-use, or command-level conclusion is established here.
You cannot keep a home computer running for continuous playout StreamNeo first It runs a prerecorded YouTube stream from the cloud, so your computer can be off; uploaded media streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free.

Whichever local encoder you choose, test the exact media, output settings, network, and restart procedure you intend to use. No evidence here supports a blanket claim that OBS or FFmpeg is more reliable for 24/7 operation.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the difficult part is leaving a computer and home connection on, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer does not have to stay on; StreamNeo streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
