PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchNeither OBS nor FFmpeg has a reliably lower electricity use on every 24/7 YouTube PC. The result depends on the whole computer and the work it is doing: encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene or filter complexity, and other system activity. To find the lower-power setup on your machine, compare matched configurations and measure cumulative energy at the wall—not CPU or GPU utilization alone.
Why there is no universal OBS-versus-FFmpeg power winner
The application name alone does not determine the electricity bill. OBS can render and composite scenes as well as encode video, so a simple media-source scene is not equivalent to one with animated overlays, filters, or other GPU work. OBS also notes that CPU requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee a computer can stream or record smoothly (OBS system requirements; OBS encoding performance troubleshooting).
Encoder choice changes the workload. OBS explains that hardware encoders move encoding work off the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU. That may help performance, but it does not prove lower total wall-power use on every machine. Hardware generation, drivers, quality settings, and compatibility matter (OBS hardware encoding). FFmpeg is configurable too, including hardware-encoding and hardware-acceleration options (FFmpeg documentation). An OBS hardware-encoder run compared with FFmpeg software encoding is a comparison of two different configurations, not just two applications.
No published apples-to-apples wattage result for this exact workload—same PC, video, encoder, settings, and YouTube stream—is established by the official documentation cited here. Treat the answer for your PC as something to measure.

How to compare electricity use fairly
- Define the equipment being measured. Decide whether the comparison covers only the PC or also a display and other equipment, then measure the same devices in both runs. If the display is not needed for the unattended stream, keep it off for both tests; the U.S. Department of Energy advises turning off monitors when a networked computer must remain on (DOE guidance on energy-efficient computers).
- Hold the workload constant. Use the same PC, power supply, operating-system power profile, video file, audio, output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, destination, and network conditions. Keep unrelated updates, downloads, backups, room cooling, and background workloads out of the test where possible.
- Match the encoding goal and document the paths. Use equivalent output settings, and record each app’s encoder, preset, hardware acceleration, filters, and other processing. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and RTMPS in its live encoder guidance; match delivery settings and network destination where possible, and note any differences (YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
- Measure cumulative energy at the wall. Use a plug-in energy monitor that records energy over time. Check its electrical rating, outlet compatibility, and logging capability. The monitor measures consumption; it does not reduce it. DOE guidance says fluctuating consumption should be measured over an interval and divided by the measurement period to determine average power (DOE: Measuring Standby Power).
- Let startup activity settle, then run equal intervals. Record cumulative energy for each run over the same sufficiently long duration. Repeat if practical and alternate which application runs first to reduce bias from time of day or background activity. Record interruptions and failed stream intervals instead of silently excluding them.
- Calculate and report the result. Average watts = measured kWh ÷ elapsed hours × 1,000. For a rough annual projection, annual kWh = average kW × 8,760 hours. Label that annual figure as an extrapolation from the measured interval, not a year-long test. Report kWh as well as average watts, along with meter, duration, PC specifications, software versions, settings, and uncertainty.
DOE’s FEMP standby-power procedure specifies instrument uncertainty below 2% at 95% confidence for measurements above 0.5 W. It also describes resolution of 0.01 W or less below 10 W and 0.1 W or less above 10 W up to 100 W. These are requirements in a standby-power measurement procedure, not a claim that every consumer plug meter meets them or that the procedure precisely covers a live-PC workload.
How to interpret the result
- If one run uses less energy, first check whether its encoder, output settings, scene or filter work, and background load actually matched the other run.
- Compare cumulative kWh over equal intervals, not a brief watt reading or CPU/GPU utilization percentage. Utilization describes activity, not the complete system’s energy consumption.
- If stream delivery fails or either app drops frames, note that alongside energy use. A lower-power run is not an equivalent result if it did not deliver the intended stream.
- Repeat runs when readings are close or fluctuate. State the meter’s uncertainty rather than presenting a small difference as definitive.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube loop rather than keeping a PC online, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home. A slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded-video streams to YouTube, not live camera streaming.
