Choose OBS if you want hands-on control over scenes, audio, and encoding and can keep a suitable computer and internet connection running. Choose cloud playout if you want uploaded music videos to keep playing without relying on a computer at home. Neither workflow guarantees uninterrupted streaming, audience growth, monetization, or permission to use particular music. The difference is where playback runs and how much operational work you take on.
How OBS and cloud playout differ

This is a workflow comparison, not a measured ranking of uptime, cost, stream continuity, or audience growth. The service descriptions are not independent performance tests.
When OBS is the better choice
OBS suits a music stream that needs custom scenes, on-screen graphics, source switching, or hands-on audio mixing. It can also be attractive if you already have a computer and network connection that can sustain the stream and are willing to maintain them.
Do not assume that a computer is suitable just because it meets OBS’s basic compatibility requirements. OBS says CPU demand depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, and warns: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Check the official OBS system requirements, then test the actual workload. If shopping for a machine, compare its operating-system and graphics support, processor or GPU encoding capability, cooling, and power use against your intended settings rather than relying on an untested model recommendation.

Set up OBS to send a continuous stream
- Check YouTube eligibility. YouTube’s live-stream instructions require a verified channel and no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. Review YouTube’s live-streaming setup and eligibility guidance before planning a long-running broadcast.
- Prepare the playback and production setup. Add your music video files as sources in OBS, arrange the desired scenes, and configure audio. The exact source and scene design depends on whether the stream is a fixed visual loop or a produced show; test that playback continues as intended before leaving it unattended.
- Choose settings for the machine and connection. Resolution, frame rate, encoder, scene complexity, and bitrate affect load and transmission. Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then validate with a real stream at the target settings. There is no universal bitrate or resolution that is safe for every computer and connection; OBS notes that dropped frames can point to an unstable connection to the destination or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. - Create or select the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and obtain its server URL and stream key following YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the stream details as prompted. Use YouTube’s server URL and stream key, then start streaming in OBS and confirm in YouTube Studio that the incoming stream is healthy before you rely on it.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the new key.
- Monitor the real operating conditions. Watch for dropped frames, encoder overload, audio interruptions, and loss of the internet connection. A continuous stream also needs a plan for restarting OBS and recovering the broadcast after a computer, power, or network interruption.
YouTube says live content must comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. A file copy of a song does not by itself establish that you have the rights to stream it. Confirm the rights for each music track and visual element you use; the general policy pages do not establish permission for any particular catalog.
When cloud playout is the better choice
Cloud playout is a better fit if the main job is to keep a playlist of uploaded recordings playing without leaving a home computer running. It reduces local machine operation, but does not remove the need to configure the channel, upload suitable content, check plan limits, and handle account or provider issues.

As one example, playout.video describes cloud channels for looped channels and music streams, with playlists and scheduling. Its product page describes the free offering as limited to two hours per stream session and paid plans as offering 24/7 playout; treat those as the provider’s stated terms, and check its current plan page for applicable limits. The provider’s February 22, 2026 guide to starting a 24/7 YouTube stream describes creating an account, adding at least one video, connecting a platform account, building a playlist, and launching from its dashboard. Its help article says it accepts MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM files. These are provider-documented features and steps, not independently measured uptime or performance findings.
Cloud operation shifts rather than eliminates dependencies: the stream relies on the provider’s service, account access, plan, and content handling. Check current quality, storage, destination, session-duration, and scheduling limits before committing to a workflow.

Archive length and content rules still matter
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise that a stream lasting longer will be saved as one complete video, so do not plan on a single full-length archive for a broadcast that passes that threshold. The encoder and playout method do not change YouTube’s live-stream eligibility or content policies.

Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube does not show an incoming stream: confirm the selected stream, server URL, and stream key match YouTube Studio. If the key was exposed or changed, replace it and update OBS.
- OBS reports dropped frames: OBS identifies an unstable connection to the destination or an unsustainable bitrate as possible causes. Test the network and lower the bitrate or output demands if the connection cannot sustain them; validate again at the intended settings. OBS Help
- The encoder overloads or playback stutters: reduce the workload by adjusting resolution, frame rate, encoder choice, or scene complexity, then test again. OBS requirements vary by workload and do not guarantee performance on compatible hardware. OBS system requirements
- The stream stops when the computer or connection fails: local OBS depends on that computer and its connection. Restore the machine and network, reopen OBS, and verify the live state in YouTube Studio. A cloud workflow removes the home computer from the playout path but remains dependent on the provider and account.
- A cloud playlist will not launch or keep running: check that files are in a supported format, the playlist is configured, the YouTube account connection is valid, and the plan permits the intended duration and output. For provider-specific failures, consult that service’s current help and status information.
- A stream is interrupted or content is claimed: check YouTube Studio notifications and restrictions, and confirm that you have rights for the music and visuals. Neither a successful upload nor a working encoder proves that the content is cleared for live use.
Choose by the work you want to own
Use OBS when scene-level control and direct production work matter and you can operate the computer and connection. Use cloud playout when the stream is primarily a playlist of recordings and keeping a home machine running is the burden you want to remove. Compare current service limits and test your own end-to-end setup; neither choice makes YouTube policy, music rights, or stream monitoring irrelevant.
