Choose OBS if you want to operate the stream yourself from a computer; choose a cloud service if you want prerecorded videos to keep streaming without leaving a computer running. Both approaches can send an encoder-based broadcast to YouTube. The practical differences are where the stream runs, how much you manage, and which costs and dependencies you accept.
How OBS and cloud streaming differ
| Decision point | OBS on your computer | Cloud streaming service |
|---|---|---|
| Where the encoder runs | On a computer you operate. | On the provider’s hosted infrastructure. YouTube lists Gyre as an example of a cloud-based tool for continuous prerecorded streams. |
| Control and dependencies | You manage the local setup and depend on the computer and its network connection staying available. | You depend on the service, its account, supported file workflow, and current terms. Features vary by provider. |
| Scheduling | YouTube supports scheduled broadcasts, but you must connect the encoder to the scheduled event and may need to start the stream in Live Control Room. | Check the provider’s current documentation for scheduling and automation; YouTube’s listing of Gyre does not establish every service’s capabilities. |
| Monitoring and recovery | Test the complete broadcast path, including audio and motion. You operate the local setup. | Check the provider’s documentation for monitoring, alerts, retries, and recovery. No comparative reliability evidence establishes that cloud services are inherently more reliable. |
| Cost | Account for computer purchase or operating costs if you dedicate a machine. No cost figure is established here. | Check current subscription, usage, storage, and cancellation terms. No general cloud-service price is established here. |
This is a decision framework, not a measured head-to-head test. YouTube’s encoder guide identifies both encoder-based broadcasting and a cloud-based prerecorded-streaming example; it does not compare their uptime, quality, or value.
When OBS is the better fit
- You want direct, hands-on control of a local encoder setup.
- You already have a suitable computer and network connection available for the broadcast.
- You are comfortable operating and monitoring that computer for as long as the stream runs.
- You want to test the full path yourself before scheduling a broadcast.
For a continuously running channel, remember that local operation makes the computer and its internet connection part of the streaming chain. If either becomes unavailable, the local encoder cannot continue sending the broadcast.
When a cloud service is the better fit
- You do not want a computer at home to remain on for the broadcast.
- You want a hosted workflow for prerecorded files rather than operating a local encoder.
- You have checked the vendor’s current support for scheduling, file handling, monitoring, recovery, storage, and cancellation.
YouTube’s encoder guide names Gyre as an example of a cloud-based tool for continuous prerecorded-video streaming. That listing is not a recommendation or a comparison: it does not establish current pricing, plan limits, uptime, or which service is best.

Set up an OBS broadcast to YouTube
- Enable live streaming and prepare the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a broadcast. YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours, so allow time before a planned launch.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. If your encoder offers an integrated YouTube connection, select YouTube and follow its connection flow. Otherwise, copy YouTube’s stream URL into the encoder’s server field and the stream key into its key field. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it or expose it in a recording or public screenshot.
- Connect the scheduled event. Follow YouTube’s Live Control Room setup flow to connect the encoder to the scheduled broadcast. Depending on the flow, you may need to start the stream from Live Control Room after OBS begins sending.
- Choose the recommended transport. YouTube recommends RTMPS for streams. Use the server details YouTube provides for the event and encoder rather than guessing a URL.
- Test the complete broadcast. YouTube recommends a test with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. Check that the correct video and audio are reaching the event, and confirm the stream appears as expected before relying on a long broadcast.
- Go live and monitor the path. Start the encoder, verify that YouTube is receiving the signal, then start the event through the required Live Control Room control. Keep the computer and network connection available while OBS is sending the stream.
OBS’s format guidance concerns recording formats as well as streaming workflows. It discusses fragmented MP4/MOV as possible choices for users uploading to platforms such as YouTube, but a recording container does not automatically determine the right streaming configuration. Choose recording and stream settings for their respective jobs.
Plan around YouTube’s archive and channel rules
- Archive length: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer continuous broadcast will be archived the same way; arrange your own recording or other archive plan if you need a copy.
- Copyright: Use footage, music, and other material only when you have the necessary rights or permission. A video being prerecorded does not make its content exempt from copyright rules.
- Reused content and monetization: Livestreaming alone does not qualify a channel for monetization. YouTube says eligibility depends on program status, and channels should review applicable monetization policies for their content.
- Scheduled events: Scheduling does not itself start an encoder broadcast. Ensure the scheduled event is connected to the encoder and follow the Live Control Room prompts.
Troubleshooting common setup problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | The encoder is not using the event’s stream URL or key, or the event is not connected. | In Live Control Room, verify the selected event and copy its current server URL and stream key into the corresponding encoder fields. Keep the key private. |
| The scheduled event is not live after OBS starts | The event may still require an action in Live Control Room. | Return to the scheduled event and follow the on-screen start flow; confirm YouTube is receiving the encoder signal. |
| Audio or motion is missing or unlike the intended broadcast | The test did not reflect the real program, or the wrong signal is being sent. | Repeat a test using audio and movement similar to the planned content, as YouTube recommends, and verify the signal before the actual broadcast. |
| The local broadcast stops when the computer or connection is unavailable | The OBS workflow depends on the local machine and its network connection. | Restore the computer and connection, then check the event’s status in Live Control Room. If you need operation without a local computer, compare a cloud workflow and verify its recovery behavior with the provider. |
| A long stream is missing from archives | The broadcast may have exceeded YouTube’s under-12-hour automatic archive condition. | Do not rely on automatic archiving for streams of 12 hours or longer; keep a separate recording if an archive is essential. |
