Start by checking the settings that define OBS’s outgoing stream—not by resetting all of OBS. Compare the encoder and codec, rate control, bitrate, keyframe interval and frame rate with YouTube’s requirements; then verify the YouTube RTMPS service and selected stream key. If OBS shows dropped frames, investigate the connection and bitrate first. A disconnect that began after an encoder change is a useful clue, but it does not by itself identify the cause.
What to check first
Before changing anything, note your OBS version and operating system, the encoder setting you changed, the exact error or disconnect message, and whether OBS reports dropped frames or shows a yellow or red connection indicator. If the checks below do not resolve the problem, an OBS log can help narrow down what happened; the title alone does not reveal which encoder or setting is involved.
Use the symptom to choose a first branch:
- Dropped frames or a changing connection indicator: check network stability and whether your upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate. OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection to the remote ingest server or a connection that cannot keep up with the selected bitrate; too many dropped frames can disconnect a stream. See the OBS stream connection troubleshooting guide.
- No dropped frames, but the stream will not connect or YouTube reports an ingest or format problem: check encoder compatibility and the YouTube service, key and broadcast selection before assuming the network is at fault.
Compare the changed encoder settings with YouTube’s requirements
In OBS, open Settings > Output and inspect the streaming encoder and its active options. OBS’s precise labels and available encoders vary by version, operating system and hardware, so compare the actual values rather than relying on a particular encoder name or menu layout.
- Rate control: YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR).
- Codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1. Availability depends on the encoder and system you are using.
- Keyframe interval: YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps.
- Bitrate: match it to the selected codec, resolution and frame rate using YouTube’s published table. For 1080p at 60 fps, the table gives H.264 a 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended; for AV1 or H.265, it gives a 4 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube recommendations, not proof that your internet connection can sustain those rates.
Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate and resolution guidance for the table that matches your output. Do not apply one bitrate as a universal fix: YouTube’s recommendations vary by format, while your stable upload capacity also matters.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Verify the YouTube service, stream key and broadcast
If the output settings appear suitable, confirm OBS is configured for YouTube RTMPS and that the intended stream key is selected. A correct encoder configuration does not ensure OBS is sending to the event you mean to start.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream.
- Check that the service is YouTube RTMPS and that the selected stream key belongs to the intended broadcast.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and check the broadcast’s stream status for incoming data or an ingest warning.
The OBS guide to streaming to YouTube describes this setup and Live Control Room workflow; interface details may change between versions.

If OBS shows dropped frames, address connection capacity
OBS’s connection guide suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a bitrate starting point. This is a troubleshooting suggestion, not a universal target: it assumes a stable upload connection, and the bitrate must still fit YouTube’s guidance for the selected stream format.
- Check the upload speed available while your connection is in normal use, not just under ideal conditions.
- If the current bitrate exceeds what the connection can reliably sustain, lower it and test again.
- If dropped frames continue, use OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance to investigate the route to the ingest server, try another server or service where applicable, and review network settings or software that may affect the connection.
OBS describes dynamic bitrate as a workaround when underlying connection problems cannot be resolved. It can reduce stream quality; it should not be treated as proof that the encoder change was the root cause.

Roll back only what changed
If you need to return to a known-good setup, change only the settings you recently altered, one at a time. Use values compatible with YouTube’s guidance and your connection, then test with both motion and audio before relying on the stream. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health. Avoid deleting profiles, reinstalling OBS or resetting every preference as a first response: the available official guidance does not establish those as universal fixes.
