OBS Says “Encoding Overloaded!” During a 24/7 YouTube Stream: Settings to Change

When OBS reports “Encoding overloaded!” during a 24/7 YouTube stream, reduce rendering and encoding workload first, then diagnose upload health and archive limits separately.

If OBS shows “Encoding overloaded!” during a 24/7 YouTube stream, first reduce OBS’s local workload: check output resolution and frame rate, free GPU capacity, and simplify demanding scenes. If x264 is the bottleneck, try a compatible hardware encoder. Separately check YouTube’s stream health and your upload connection; an encoding warning does not, by itself, mean your internet is the problem.

What “Encoding overloaded!” means

OBS needs processing time to render scenes and encode the outgoing video. If the system cannot keep up, OBS may report “Encoding overloaded!” The warning indicates a local performance problem, but it does not identify whether the bottleneck is the CPU, GPU, encoder, scene workload, or another program. The OBS Project’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide, dated June 12, 2021, advises leaving resources free for OBS when output is choppy or laggy.

YouTube’s stream-health messages concern delivery to YouTube. Encoding and delivery are separate checks: you can have a local processing problem, an upload problem, or both. Use OBS’s performance indicators and YouTube’s stream health rather than assuming one diagnosis explains the other.

Change OBS settings in this order

  1. Lower output resolution. In OBS, open Settings > Video and reduce the Output (Scaled) Resolution. A lower output resolution can reduce GPU and encoder workload. Keep the Base (Canvas) Resolution unchanged if possible; OBS says lowering the canvas is generally not recommended because it can complicate capture setup and asset layout. Consider it only under severe resource constraints.
  2. Reduce frame rate if the current rate is too demanding. In Settings > Video, try 30 fps if 60 fps is not keeping up. Lower frame rate reduces rendering and encoding work, but motion will look less smooth. Choose the best combination of image detail and motion that your system can sustain.
  3. Match the encoder to the saturated resource. If CPU-based x264 encoding is the bottleneck, a compatible hardware encoder may move encoding work to a dedicated component. If the GPU is already overloaded rendering scenes, switching to a GPU hardware encoder may not help: the scene-rendering work remains, and hardware encoding still uses system resources. OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance, while noting that older hardware encoders can deliver lower image quality than x264’s default veryfast preset at the same bitrate. See the OBS Project’s Hardware Encoding guide, dated January 11, 2022.
  4. Free GPU capacity for OBS. Close other GPU-heavy programs. If you are gaming during the broadcast, cap an uncapped game frame rate or enable V-Sync, and reduce game graphics settings if necessary. On Windows, running OBS as administrator may help in some GPU-overload cases, according to the OBS troubleshooting guide.
  5. Simplify persistent scenes. Remove unused or expensive sources, filters, and browser sources; use source dimensions appropriate to your output. OBS notes that some sources can consume resources even when they are not visible, and browser overlays can be demanding.
  6. Test the adjusted setup under representative load. Include the scenes, audio, overlays, and motion you expect during the broadcast. Watch OBS performance and YouTube stream health during a sustained test; no single preset or guaranteed stable duration applies to every computer.

Check YouTube ingest settings separately

Use settings appropriate to your encoder and connection, then confirm delivery using YouTube stream health. YouTube’s Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, not a measurement of your connection; do not apply them blindly to AV1 or H.265.

H.264 output YouTube-recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps
480p at 30 fps 3 Mbps

YouTube’s settings page does not display a publication date; these recommendations were accessed October 3, 2026. YouTube advises testing upload speed, making a representative pre-stream test with audio and motion, and monitoring stream health during the event. A bitrate that exceeds reliable upload capacity can cause delivery trouble, but lowering it does not directly cure an OBS encoding-overload warning.

Plan for the 24/7 archive and operation

A continuous broadcast has YouTube archive and DVR limits independent of whether OBS can encode it. YouTube Help’s Archive live streams guidance says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Its Turn on DVR on live streams guidance says DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If a replay or rewind matters, keep a local recording and consider dividing the broadcast into shorter sessions rather than relying on a single 24-hour stream to be archived.

  • Verify that local archive files are growing during the broadcast.
  • Continuously monitor outgoing audio and video quality, not just whether the stream page remains live.
  • Keep a recovery plan for a dropped stream, a stopped local recording, or degraded upload conditions.

YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance covers ingest settings; its computer live streaming tips advise verifying local archive files and monitoring quality. A 24/7 stream also remains subject to YouTube’s copyright and other live-stream rules; use content you have rights to broadcast.
