Start by identifying the source type. The exact cause cannot be determined without the error text, OBS version, operating system, and source settings; a reboot alone does not establish that a path changed.
First identify what kind of source is missing

OBS distinguishes Media Source, which is for media files, from VLC Video Source, which supports playlists. VLC Video Source depends on VLC being installed; OBS documents that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
Fix a missing local file
- Select the source: In the relevant scene, select the source named in the warning. If you cannot tell which source it is, inspect the sources in that scene and open their properties one at a time.
- Check the file location: Open the source’s properties and inspect the file path. Verify that the file still exists at that location and that the selected file is the intended recording.
- Restore or update the path: If the file was moved, put it back where OBS expects it, or use the file-browse control in the source properties to select its current location. A community example of this error recommends updating the location or removing a source that is no longer needed; it is forum advice, not a formal OBS support article (OBS forum discussion).
- Remove only obsolete sources: If you no longer need the file, remove its source from the scene rather than leaving a broken reference.
- Test playback: Check the OBS preview. If the file now plays there, the source reference is working; if it does not, recheck the selected file and its accessibility.
A reboot may be when a problem becomes visible, but it does not prove the reboot caused it. The available details do not establish your operating system, drive mapping, or whether the source path was changed.

Repair a YouTube playlist or other VLC playlist input
Check the source and playlist entries
Open the VLC Video Source properties and confirm that the expected playlist entries are still present. Check each entry: local files must still be accessible at their listed locations, while network entries must still be valid and reachable. A playlist source is not the same as a single Media Source, so changing a Media Source path will not repair a broken playlist entry.
Confirm VLC is available in the matching architecture
VLC Video Source requires VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS’s documentation specifies 64-bit VLC. If the VLC source is absent or cannot play, check VLC installation and architecture before changing unrelated OBS settings.

Review looping and visibility behavior
OBS provides separate VLC Video Source controls for looping the playlist and for stopping or restarting playback when the source becomes visible or hidden. Review these options if playback ends, restarts unexpectedly, or behaves differently when you switch scenes. The correct choice depends on whether you want the playlist to continue while hidden or restart when it appears.
Separate source playback from the live output
Look at the OBS preview first. If the playlist or video does not play in the preview, troubleshoot the source, its entries, VLC, and playback behavior. If it does play in OBS but viewers cannot see it, investigate the outgoing broadcast separately: a scene contains sources, while the stream output sends the composed scene to viewers. OBS explains this distinction in its Sources Guide. This sequence helps narrow down the fault; it is not a guaranteed diagnosis.

If the source still stops or freezes
- Missing-file warning remains: Reopen the named source’s properties and confirm that the path points to the intended, accessible file. If the entry is no longer needed, remove it.
- Playlist entry is missing or inaccessible: Check the entry itself rather than the overall scene. Restore the local file or correct the entry to use its current valid location or network source.
- VLC source cannot play: Verify that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS as described above.
- Playback ends or restarts at scene changes: Review the VLC source’s loop and visibility settings.
- OBS preview plays, but the YouTube broadcast does not show it: Keep source troubleshooting separate from stream-output troubleshooting and inspect the outgoing broadcast path.
- A YouTube playlist freezes after running for a while: One OBS forum poster reported a VLC source ingesting a YouTube playlist freezing after about an hour, but that is an individual report, not evidence of a common OBS or YouTube cause or a universal fix (OBS forum discussion).
