If OBS says it reconnected but YouTube still shows your stream as offline, check YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room before changing encoder settings. OBS reports its connection to an ingest server; YouTube’s stream health and incoming preview show whether YouTube is receiving a usable stream. The exact health message, preview, and OBS log help distinguish a YouTube ingest or stream-key issue from an encoder or network problem.
Start with YouTube’s Live Control Room
Open the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Read the stream status and any error text, then check whether an incoming preview appears. YouTube says stream health and analytics are available there while streaming. A reconnect message in OBS alone does not establish that YouTube has resumed receiving valid video and audio.
Use the message YouTube actually displays as your next clue. Its error guidance distinguishes critical errors from moderate warnings and identifies configuration issues such as video or audio format, bitrate, stream settings, keyframe frequency, resolution, or mismatched primary and backup streams. Correct the setting implicated by the message rather than changing several settings at once. YouTube’s recommended settings depend on the chosen resolution and encoder configuration.
Check that OBS is sending to the intended stream
Confirm that the stream selected in YouTube Studio is the one you intend to broadcast, and that OBS is using the corresponding server URL and stream key. A key or stream-selection mismatch can leave YouTube waiting even while OBS reports a connection to an ingest server.

For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s encoder workflow is to start the encoder, wait for the preview, and then select Go live in Live Control Room. If a third-party encoder reports a start error, YouTube advises getting a new stream key and updating the encoder. Regenerating a key is a targeted response to a key-related error—not a general fix for every offline status.
Use OBS’s own evidence to identify connection or encoder trouble
Check OBS’s log for the specific event around the disconnect and reconnect. OBS distinguishes connection failures, invalid paths or URLs, inaccessible stream keys, disconnections, and encoding errors. The reconnect indicator does not tell you which of those occurred or prove that YouTube accepted the resumed output.

If OBS reports dropped frames
Dropped frames point to an unstable connection to the remote ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain; they do not, by themselves, mean OBS is defective. OBS Project describes it this way: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.”
OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guidance, dated September 30, 2024, gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate. Treat that as a starting recommendation, not a guarantee: usable upload capacity can vary, and the streaming service’s limits and the rest of your connection matter. If you lower bitrate, check YouTube’s resulting health status and preview before making further changes.

If OBS reports an encoding error
Investigate the encoder path when OBS identifies an encoding problem, or when the local output is visibly or audibly unhealthy. Compare that evidence with YouTube’s preview: a healthy-looking encoder output alongside no usable YouTube preview points toward delivery or ingest rather than proving a local encoding fault. Follow the specific OBS or YouTube message before changing encoder settings.
Isolate the network path before replacing hardware
- Compare bitrate with stable upload capacity. Reduce the configured bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it, then check whether dropped frames and YouTube’s health message change.
- Try wired Ethernet if you are streaming over Wi-Fi. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. This is a useful comparison, not proof that Wi-Fi caused the incident.
- Rule out software interference. OBS recommends checking VPNs, security software, network-optimization software, and outdated drivers as possible factors. Test changes carefully and restore protections after any controlled test.
- Check the existing network equipment and connections. Inspect the modem or router connection, cable seating, ports, and network card only if the symptoms point to a hardware or link problem. OBS lists these as possible fault points, but does not make replacing them the default remedy.
- Test outbound connectivity and involve your ISP when indicated. If the encoder output looks and sounds healthy but YouTube’s troubleshooting points to outbound internet, test the outbound connection. Contact your ISP if connectivity problems persist or you need help investigating the route.
OBS advises speaking with your ISP if you are unsure before replacing equipment. A new router or cable will not correct a wrong stream key, stream selection, or ingest-format setting.
