OBS Profile Settings for Switching Between 720p and 1080p YouTube Loop Streams

Create separate OBS Profiles for 720p and 1080p YouTube loop streams, keep canvas and output resolution straight, and choose a bitrate your connection can sustain.

To switch a YouTube loop stream between 720p and 1080p in OBS, create two Profiles and set each Profile’s Output (Scaled) Resolution to the target size: 1280×720 or 1920×1080. Keep the loop’s scene layout in the intended Scene Collection, because Profiles save output settings but do not save scenes. Match bitrate and frame rate to YouTube’s live-stream guidance and your stable upload capacity, then test both Profiles before using them live.

Profiles, Scene Collections, and resolution: what changes

An OBS Profile saves most settings related to outputs, including Video and Output settings. You can select a Profile from the Profile menu; OBS documents creating, duplicating, renaming, removing, and importing or exporting Profiles in its Profiles guide.

Scenes are separate. They are stored in Scene Collections, not Profiles. A resolution change through the Profile menu therefore does not automatically change the scenes, sources, or layout. Keep the intended Scene Collection selected separately.

In Settings → Video, the Base (Canvas) Resolution is the work area used to position sources. Output (Scaled) Resolution is the resolution OBS encodes for the stream. OBS explains these settings in its Studio Overview Guide. For a standard 16:9 loop, use 1280×720 as the 720p output and 1920×1080 as the 1080p output. The canvas can remain appropriate to the source and scene layout; it need not be changed just because the encoded output changes.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Create the 720p and 1080p Profiles

  1. Create the first Profile. Open OBS’s Profile menu and choose New, or duplicate a working configuration and rename it. Give it a clear name such as YouTube Loop 720p.
  2. Set its output resolution. Open Settings → Video. Keep Base (Canvas) Resolution suitable for the loop and scene layout. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720.
  3. Set frame rate and encoder output. Choose the intended output frame rate—commonly 30 or 60 fps—and configure the streaming encoder in Settings → Output. Use the bitrate range that matches the chosen resolution and frame rate in the table below. YouTube’s figures cited here are for H.264 live ingest, not prerecorded-video uploads.
  4. Use the live-stream rate controls. Set rate control to CBR and keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Keep the codec and other shared settings consistent between Profiles unless a hardware or platform constraint requires otherwise.
  5. Create the second Profile. Use Profile → Duplicate or Profile → New, and name it YouTube Loop 1080p. In Settings → Video, set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1920×1080. Select the frame rate and set bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval as above, using the matching 1080p row below.
  6. Check the production layout. Select the Scene Collection that contains the intended loop source and layout. Confirm that the source is visible and positioned correctly at the selected output resolution.

Choose a YouTube H.264 live bitrate

YouTube’s live encoder settings give the following recommended bitrate ranges by ingestion resolution and frame rate. These are H.264 live-stream recommendations, not upload bitrate suggestions for prerecorded files. Choose a rate within the applicable range that your connection can sustain reliably; the top of a range is not automatically the right choice for your connection.

Output YouTube H.264 live bitrate range Keyframe interval
720p, 30 fps 3–8 Mbps 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds
1080p, 30 fps 5–14 Mbps 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds
720p, 60 fps 3–8 Mbps 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds
1080p, 60 fps 6–17 Mbps 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds

These ranges and settings are from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings, accessed in 2026. The recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures above apply specifically to the H.264 column; do not carry them over to a different codec without checking YouTube’s relevant guidance.

Use your stable upload capacity, not a brief speed-test peak, as the practical limit. OBS’s network troubleshooting guide suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for stream bitrate, but that is broad OBS advice, not a YouTube-specific guarantee. Leave capacity for normal network variation and other traffic. If the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate, lower it and test again.

Switch Profiles and verify the stream

  1. Stop the current broadcast before changing output settings. Select Profile → YouTube Loop 720p or Profile → YouTube Loop 1080p.
  2. Confirm the active Profile and its Settings → Video output resolution, frame rate, and Settings → Output encoder settings. Selecting the Profile does not select a Scene Collection, so check that separately.
  3. Run a private, unlisted, or otherwise suitable test stream before relying on either Profile. Check YouTube’s stream health and watch a representative section of the loop for image quality, smooth playback, and audio if present. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health on the encoder-settings page.
  4. Repeat the test for the other Profile. A successful test at 720p does not establish that the same connection or computer can handle 1080p at the selected frame rate and bitrate.

A loop is a content-source workflow, not a special OBS Profile mode. The Profile controls output configuration; the loop media and its arrangement remain part of the production setup. Make sure you have the rights needed to broadcast the video and its audio. Repeating a file does not itself establish permission to use it or guarantee that a channel will meet YouTube’s monetization requirements.

Troubleshoot overload, buffering, or the wrong output

  • 1080p overloads the encoder or rendering pipeline: Check OBS Stats and YouTube stream health. Reduce the Output (Scaled) Resolution or frame rate, then retest. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide recommends reducing output resolution to lower GPU load. Lowering the canvas is generally not the first fix because it can require repositioning or resizing sources.
  • Frames drop or viewers buffer: If the connection cannot sustain the configured rate, lower the video bitrate within the applicable YouTube range and retest. Also consider reducing resolution or frame rate if a stable bitrate alone does not resolve it. Use OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide for network-related checks.
  • The stream is still the old resolution: Confirm the intended Profile is active and check Output (Scaled) Resolution under Settings → Video. Changing Base (Canvas) Resolution alone does not set the encoded stream size.
  • The loop scene or layout is wrong: Select the correct Scene Collection. Profiles and Scene Collections are independent, so switching Profiles does not switch scenes.
  • Picture looks soft or sources are misplaced after a switch: Check that the source resolution and canvas layout suit the output. Changing output resolution scales the encoded result; it does not create detail absent from the source. Avoid changing the canvas casually, since that can affect source positioning.
