For local gaming VOD files, use OBS’s built-in Media Source for one video and VLC Video when you need a playlist. VLC Video supports playlist looping, shuffle, and controls for what happens when the source is hidden. OBS’s documentation does not establish that either source can play a YouTube page or playlist URL directly.

What VLC Video adds—and what it requires
OBS describes VLC Video as using VLC libraries for extended media support compared with the built-in Media Source. VLC Video will not appear as an OBS source until VLC is installed. OBS also specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. The OBS Sources Guide explains the general role of sources in scenes.
Media Source has no VLC installation prerequisite listed in OBS’s documentation. For a single local file, it is the simpler documented choice; VLC Video is useful when you need its playlist features.

Playlist, looping, and visibility settings
VLC Video playlist controls
- Loop Playlist: on by default, so the playlist repeats.
- Shuffle Playlist: off by default; enable it if you want items played in shuffled order.
- Visibility Behavior: choose how playback responds when the source is hidden, such as continuing, pausing, or stopping.
- Additional controls: VLC Video also exposes network caching, audio track, and subtitle options. The documented network caching default is 400 ms.
Media Source behavior
Media Source has a loop setting for an individual file. It can also be configured to restart when it becomes active and to close the file when inactive. These controls address a single media item rather than a playlist of VODs.
Does VLC Video play a YouTube VOD URL?
“YouTube VOD” can mean a local video file originally published on YouTube, or a video hosted on YouTube and represented by a webpage URL. A local file added to a VLC Video playlist fits the documented playlist use case. Directly pasting a YouTube URL into VLC Video is not established by OBS’s official source documentation, so do not rely on it without independently verifying your specific setup.

The yt-dlp FAQ documents a separate method that pipes a YouTube video through yt-dlp to VLC. That is a different workflow, not proof that an OBS VLC Video source accepts YouTube URLs directly; the FAQ also notes that site URL schemes can change.
How to choose
- Choose Media Source for one local gaming VOD, especially if you only need single-file playback or looping.
- Choose VLC Video for a playlist of local VOD files when you need playlist looping, shuffle, or visibility behavior, and install the VLC version that matches OBS’s architecture.
- If you mean a YouTube-hosted URL rather than a local file, treat direct playback in either source as unverified by the OBS documentation.
