For a straightforward ordered playlist in OBS, use the built-in VLC Video source. For one local video that should repeat, use Media Source and turn on Loop. The community Media Playlist Source plugin is worth considering if its live-editing or restart-persistence features matter to your workflow—but check its current compatibility before relying on it. None of these source choices makes a YouTube stream 4K at 60 fps by itself: output resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframes, encoder capacity, and upload connection must be configured and tested separately.
Which OBS source should you choose?
| Your need | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat one local video file | OBS Media Source | It is the direct single-file option and includes a Loop setting. |
| Play several files in a fixed sequence | OBS VLC Video | It is OBS’s built-in playlist source. VLC must be installed, and its architecture must match OBS. |
| Edit a playlist while it is playing or restore the current file after OBS restarts | Media Playlist Source plugin | The plugin listing describes these workflow features; compatibility depends on its current build and your OBS version. |
This is a workflow comparison, not a performance ranking. There is no cited controlled comparison showing that the plugin or VLC Video performs better at 4K/60. Your result also depends on the files, scene, encoder, computer, and network.
What each playlist option does
OBS Media Source: one file that repeats
OBS’s Media Sources guide describes Media Source as a source for a single media file, with a Loop option. The guide lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM for video, plus MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV for audio. It does not document Media Source as the playlist workflow for several files. The guide is dated January 11, 2022, so check the settings in your installed OBS build. OBS Media Sources guide.
OBS VLC Video: the built-in playlist source
VLC Video is the clearest built-in choice for an ordered multi-file playlist. OBS says VLC must be installed for the source to appear, and a 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC. Add files in the order you want them to play. For a fixed order, leave Shuffle Playlist off; turn on Loop Playlist if the sequence should repeat. OBS documents these as the defaults. Network caching is a source setting, documented at 400 ms; it may matter for network media, but it is not evidence of improved 4K performance. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

Media Playlist Source: a community-plugin alternative
The plugin listing describes editing playlist changes and settings without restarting playback, and restoring the current file when OBS restarts. It also describes shuffle based on VLC 4’s implementation. The listing identifies version 0.1.3, dated August 8, 2023, a minimum OBS Studio version of 30.0.0, 64-bit support, and Windows, macOS, and Linux builds. These are listing details, not a guarantee that the plugin works with every current OBS release or platform. Before installing, check the live listing for its current version, supported OBS build, platform package, and installation notes. Media Playlist Source listing.
Do you need VLC for an OBS playlist?
Only if you choose OBS’s VLC Video source. Media Source can loop a single supported local media file without VLC. The Media Playlist Source plugin is a separate option with its own compatibility and installation checks; do not assume that it is interchangeable with VLC Video or supported in your installed OBS build.

Set up a playlist in OBS
For one repeating file
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene and select the local file.
- Enable Loop in the source properties if it should repeat.
- Confirm the source is visible in the scene and that its audio is routed as intended in the OBS audio mixer.
- Play through the file, including its end and restart, to check for unwanted gaps, missing audio, or an incorrect scene layout.
For a multi-file VLC playlist
- Install VLC before configuring OBS. Match the application architecture: use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- In OBS, add VLC Video as a source. If it is not available, verify that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
- Add the media files in the intended order. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed sequence; enable it only if you want a randomized order.
- Enable Loop Playlist if the list should start again after the last file.
- Check the preview, audio mixer, and scene composition while the playlist runs. Test transitions between files, not only the first file.
For the Media Playlist Source plugin
- Check the plugin’s current listing and installation notes against your installed OBS version and operating system. The listing’s stated minimum is OBS Studio 30.0.0, but that does not establish compatibility with every later build.
- Install only a build intended for your platform, following the plugin’s current instructions.
- Configure the playlist and any live-editing or restart-persistence behavior you need, then test those behaviors before using it on a scheduled broadcast.
Configure YouTube for 4K at 60 fps separately
A playlist source controls what OBS plays; it does not set or guarantee the stream’s outgoing resolution, frame rate, encoding quality, or stability. Configure the encoder and stream connection in OBS and YouTube’s Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, detects encoder settings automatically by default, and transcodes live streams for different viewers. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before a broadcast because requirements can change.
| YouTube 4K/2160p at 60 fps guidance | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265 | 35 Mbps |
| H.264 | 50 Mbps |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
These are YouTube’s recommended encoder settings, not a guarantee that a particular computer or connection can sustain them. Set the output resolution and frame rate to 2160p and 60 fps in your encoder workflow, select a supported codec, use CBR, and set the keyframe interval to two seconds. Monitor stream health during a test; adequate upload capacity and encoder performance still matter.

Check the whole scene, not just the video file
- Confirm that the scene output is actually composed and configured for the intended 2160p/60 stream; a 4K source file alone does not ensure 4K output.
- Listen for audio from every playlist item and check levels, routing, and synchronization.
- Watch movement and scene changes for dropped frames, stutters, or unexpected gaps.
- Test the complete stream path before the live event. YouTube specifically advises, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
YouTube’s guidance says the 4K low-latency option is unavailable; 4K streams use normal latency. Choose the latency setting with that limitation in mind.
Copyright and YouTube channel considerations
Having a file on your computer does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast its video or audio. Before putting a film, documentary, soundtrack, or other recording into a public live playlist, confirm that your permission covers YouTube streaming and the intended territory and use. YouTube may detect copyrighted material during a live broadcast; a playlist source does not bypass platform copyright systems or channel policies. Review YouTube’s current copyright guidance and applicable channel rules before streaming.

Keep the stream genuinely useful to viewers and ensure that you have the necessary rights. YouTube monetization eligibility and policy assessments are separate from OBS playback configuration; repeating a file does not itself establish originality or monetization eligibility. Check YouTube’s current channel monetization policies if monetization is relevant.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is missing from OBS sources | VLC is not installed, or OBS and VLC architectures do not match. | Install VLC and confirm both applications are 64-bit when using 64-bit OBS. |
| The playlist plays in the wrong order | Shuffle is enabled or the files were added in an unintended order. | Disable Shuffle Playlist for fixed ordering and review the file list. |
| The playlist stops after the final file | Loop Playlist is off. | Enable Loop Playlist and test the transition from the last item to the first. |
| A plugin feature fails after an OBS update | The plugin build may not match the installed OBS version or platform. | Check the current plugin listing, release, and installation notes; test the feature before relying on it live. |
| The stream is not 4K/60 even though the media is | The source resolution was mistaken for the encoder’s output settings, or YouTube has not received the intended settings. | Verify OBS output resolution, frame rate, encoder configuration, stream connection, and YouTube stream health. |
| 4K/60 stutters or drops frames | The encoder or upload connection may not sustain the workload and recommended bitrate. | Run an end-to-end test, monitor OBS and YouTube health indicators, and reduce output demands if the system or connection cannot maintain them. |
| Video appears but audio is absent or wrong | Source audio, OBS mixer routing, or scene audio configuration may be incorrect. | Check each item’s audio, mixer meters, monitoring, and the stream’s received audio in a test. |
