First identify which frames are being lost: in OBS, open View → Stats while the stutter is happening and check Rendering Lag, Encoding Lag and Dropped Frames (Network). Each points to a different problem. If all three remain clear but viewers still report buffering, investigate playback conditions and the stream’s bitrate rather than changing unrelated OBS settings.
Diagnose the stutter before changing settings
Reproduce the problem, open View → Stats in OBS, and note which counters increase. Also check YouTube Live Control Room for stream-health messages and compare what viewers report with a local recording. If the recording itself stutters, the problem is likely in capture, rendering or encoding; if it is smooth locally, network delivery or viewer playback may be involved. Change one setting at a time and compare under similar conditions.
- Rendering lag: OBS cannot render the scene on time, commonly because GPU capacity is under pressure.
- Encoding lag: the selected encoder cannot encode frames quickly enough for the chosen output settings.
- Network dropped frames: OBS cannot maintain its connection to the ingest server at the selected bitrate.
- No OBS losses, but audience buffering: viewer connection, device, location or bitrate demand may be the issue.
OBS separates these into distinct troubleshooting paths; a network change will not fix GPU rendering lag. See the OBS encoding guide, OBS connection guide and OBS buffering guide.
If OBS shows rendering lag
Rendering is the work of compositing and drawing your scenes. Games and other GPU-heavy applications can compete with OBS, even when the encoder itself is not overloaded.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- On Windows, launch OBS as administrator. Close OBS, right-click its shortcut and choose Run as administrator. OBS says this can let Windows reserve GPU capacity for OBS.
- Free GPU capacity. Close applications you recognize that are consuming GPU resources. If a game is running uncapped, cap its frame rate or enable V-Sync so it does not occupy all available GPU time.
- Simplify the scene. Remove or reduce expensive sources, browser and media sources, and source resolutions that exceed what the stream needs. Test after each change.
- Lower the output resolution if needed. In Settings → Video, reduce Output (Scaled) Resolution and test again. If 60 fps still cannot be sustained, try 30 fps. Reducing the base canvas is a later option because sources may need repositioning.
These are workload changes, not a guarantee that a specific machine can render 4K60. OBS’s performance troubleshooting guide explains the trade-off.
If OBS shows encoding lag or “encoding overloaded”
Open Settings → Output and identify the active encoder. If the computer has a supported hardware encoder, OBS generally recommends trying it because encoding work moves from the CPU to a specialized component. The result depends on the hardware and its generation: OBS cautions that older hardware encoders may deliver lower quality at the same bitrate.

If network dropped frames are increasing
OBS describes network dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. A speed-test peak is not proof that the connection can sustain that rate throughout a live stream.

- Check bitrate against sustained upload capacity. Compare the OBS bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for your codec, and leave room for household traffic and network variation.
- Try Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi. OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection. If you are on Wi-Fi, test with Ethernet before changing encoder settings.
- Isolate network interference. Test without a VPN; check whether firewall settings, network-priority or “optimizer” software, or outdated network drivers are interfering. Change only settings you understand.
- Try another ingest server if OBS offers one. On Windows, OBS documents network optimizations and TCP pacing. Keep Bind to IP at Default. You can test IPv4-only as a diagnostic experiment; if it makes no difference, restore the default dual-stack option.
- Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback. It can reduce the stream rate during congestion, but OBS notes that it lowers quality and does not fix the underlying connection problem.
- Contact your ISP if local checks do not help. Congestion or routing beyond your home network may be outside your control.
For the exact network options and caveats, use the OBS connection troubleshooting guide.
Use YouTube’s 4K60 live settings as a reference
YouTube’s live encoder recommendations are codec-specific. For 4K/2160p at 60 fps, its current live-settings table lists the following ingest bitrates. The page does not display a publication year, so check the official guidance again when configuring a stream; platform recommendations can change.

| Codec | Minimum listed bitrate | Recommended bitrate | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps | Check encoder support and whether upload capacity can sustain the selected rate. |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | Check OBS and encoder support, codec compatibility, and sustained upload capacity. |
These are YouTube’s ingest recommendations, not a promise that any connection can sustain the recommended rate. A lower rate may be more stable on a constrained connection, but the appropriate choice depends on the encoder, system capacity, stream type and network. Do not use YouTube’s prerecorded-video upload bitrate table as a substitute for its live-stream table.
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed 4 seconds and recommends RTMPS. For SDR it lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit. For HDR it recommends H.265 and 10-bit, and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. These choices depend on the current OBS build and the streamer’s hardware. YouTube’s 4K option uses normal latency; its stream settings guidance says low latency is unavailable at 4K/2160p. See the full YouTube live encoder settings.

If OBS is clean but viewers still buffer
Ask whether the problem affects everyone or only viewers using particular devices or connections, or in particular locations. OBS’s counters describe the stream from the creator’s side; they cannot establish that every viewer can receive and decode it smoothly. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but viewer bandwidth and device limits—and a high source bitrate—can still affect playback.
- If buffering is widespread, test a lower bitrate, resolution or frame rate and monitor audience playback.
- If it affects only some viewers, ask them to try another device or connection before changing the stream for everyone.
- If preserving 4K60 is less important than reaching viewers with limited bandwidth or older devices, test a more modest output and compare the results.
OBS’s buffering guide covers viewer-side causes and platform recommendations.
Common symptoms and the next step
- “Encoding overloaded” appears: inspect the encoder in Settings → Output; test supported hardware encoding or reduce resolution or frame rate.
- Network dropped frames climb: compare bitrate with sustained upload capacity, test Ethernet, then check the other network causes above.
- Local recording is smooth but live playback stutters: check YouTube stream health and network dropped frames; if those are clear, investigate viewer playback and bitrate demand.
- Only 60 fps is unstable: test 30 fps before making broader changes; OBS notes that 60-fps streaming can be more taxing.
