Set up OBS for live gameplay and a local recording
- Create or select a YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream. Copy its server URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. - Build the scene. In OBS, add the sources needed for your broadcast: game capture for a PC game, or a capture-device source for console or external video. Add audio devices and overlays only if needed. OBS uses scenes and sources to compose the output. OBS Studio Overview Guide
- Choose a resolution and frame rate your setup can sustain. Higher frame rates demand more from the computer; OBS cautions that 60 fps can be much more taxing than 30 fps. Test with gameplay that resembles the real broadcast before committing to a setting. OBS Studio Overview Guide
- Configure a separate recording. Set the recording path and preset in OBS, and enable recording while streaming if you need a local VOD. Check the resulting file after a test broadcast rather than assuming a recording completed successfully. OBS Studio Overview Guide
- Set and test reconnect behavior. Configure OBS automatic reconnect as appropriate, then test what happens after a brief network interruption. Reconnect can help but does not prevent all outages.

Use FFmpeg to loop prerecorded gameplay
FFmpeg is the better fit when the source is an existing media file and the goal is a repeatable scripted feed—not when you need OBS-style interactive scene composition. The FFmpeg manual defines -stream_loop -1 as infinite input looping and -re as reading at the input’s native frame rate. The manual describes -re as useful when output packet timing matters, including live streaming. These options are building blocks, not a complete 24/7 YouTube setup. FFmpeg Documentation
- Check the input first. Confirm the file decodes correctly and that its video and audio are suitable for the output you intend to send. Test the exact file and container with your chosen ingest configuration.
- Apply looping and pacing deliberately. Use
-stream_loop -1to repeat the input and consider-rewhen output must be paced in real time. Confirm behavior with a short test before running it unattended. - Choose copy or re-encoding based on compatibility. Stream copy with
-c copyavoids decoding and re-encoding, so it is fast and does not add quality loss. It may fail when the target container needs information that is absent from the source. If copy is incompatible, configure an appropriate encode and test quality and load. - Provide the operational pieces around FFmpeg. You remain responsible for sending the YouTube server URL and stream key, supervising the process, handling failures and restarts, and making and checking an independent recording if the VOD must be preserved. The cited manual does not establish a complete reconnect or process-supervision solution.
Choose YouTube encoder settings for the actual stream
YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends RTMP or RTMPS transport, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or connection can sustain the stream. These minimum and recommended bitrates are YouTube Help figures accessed in 2026; they are published settings, not measured connection requirements or promised results. Check YouTube’s current table before configuring a new stream because guidance can change. Test upload capacity, leave headroom for normal network variation, and monitor stream health. Plan for the VOD separately from the live stream
YouTube says: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Its documentation does not promise that a stream longer than 12 hours will be archived completely. - If completeness matters, make an independent local recording and test it.
- After a test run, inspect the local file and check how YouTube handled the archive.
- For a stream that runs beyond 12 hours, do not assume the platform archive will contain the entire broadcast.
Troubleshoot common failures
