Short answer: OBS is the encoder; a VPS is a remote computer that can run an encoder such as OBS. Use a local computer running OBS if it can stay powered, connected and monitored. Consider a VPS when remote, unattended operation matters and you have confirmed that the instance can encode your chosen stream and sustain its outbound bandwidth. Neither option is automatically more reliable, and YouTube does not require an India-based VPS or India-specific encoder settings.
OBS and a VPS solve different problems
OBS Studio is software for encoding and sending audio and video to YouTube. A virtual private server (VPS) is a rented remote computer. It can host OBS or another encoder, but you still need to configure the encoder, supply the media, connect it to YouTube and maintain the setup.
For a podcast built from prerecorded episodes, either setup can send a continuous stream if the media is prepared to play as intended. If the stream is live microphone or camera capture, the source must also remain available to the encoder. A remote server does not make a local microphone or camera available by itself.

This is a practical decision framework, not a tested head-to-head reliability comparison. OBS cautions that meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee that a computer can stream or record the workload you choose. A low-cost CPU-only VPS should not be assumed to handle every OBS scene, resolution or frame rate. Ask the provider about the exact instance or test it before depending on it.

How India changes the decision
The key India-specific questions are practical rather than special YouTube encoder rules: how stable your local power and ISP upload are, and what bandwidth, route and instance capability a VPS provider offers in the region you choose. YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not require an India-based VPS. A nearby region may be worth considering, but the actual route and sustained upload matter more than a location label alone.
- For a local setup, check upload stability at the premises where the computer will run, including at busy times and on the network you will use for the stream.
- For a VPS, ask about sustained outbound capacity and any egress limits or charges, not only advertised download speed. Confirm the instance has the encoder hardware or CPU capacity your output needs.
- If interruptions would be costly, plan for power, network and process failures whichever option you choose. A VPS avoids dependence on your home power, but it still depends on the provider and its network.
Check YouTube eligibility and prepare the live stream
YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. The creator must also follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. YouTube recommends setting up an encoder stream at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder 15 minutes before a scheduled event. For an always-on channel, adapt the same preparation into a pre-launch test and regular operating checks.
- Enable and verify live streaming. Confirm the channel meets YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility requirements before building the stream around it.
- Create or select the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Treat the key as a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your channel.
- Configure the encoder. Enter the stream URL and key in OBS or the encoder running on the VPS. Choose the output resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate and transport based on your source, encoder capacity and upload link.
- Preview before going live. Start the encoder, inspect the Live Control Room preview and confirm the audio and video are correct before making the stream public.
- Check the viewer experience. Verify the stream appears on the channel or watch page and check playback on a phone as well as the device used to configure it.
- Keep monitoring and recovery procedures. YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video and testing encoder failover. For a 24/7 operation, decide who checks stream health, what alerts they receive and how the encoder is restarted or reconnected.
YouTube’s encoder workflow and labels can change. Follow the current controls in Live Control Room rather than relying on an old screenshot or saved setup guide.

Choose bitrate, resolution, keyframes and transport
The encoder settings must suit both the video and the sustained upload connection. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264 recommendations of 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that the route from a particular home ISP or VPS will remain stable.

YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and leaving about 20% upload headroom. Upload capacity can be lower than download capacity, and other devices sharing the connection reduce the capacity available to the stream. For a primary-plus-backup encoder arrangement, YouTube says to budget for the primary stream plus the backup stream, with the recommended headroom as well.
HLS is available for certain codec and HDR requirements, but it is not a general fix for outages. YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies 1–4 second segments in TS format, rolling playlists with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. Because HLS sends segments rather than a continuous RTMP feed, it has higher latency. Use it only when your specific ingestion need calls for it and the encoder can meet those requirements.

Plan for interruptions and 24/7 operation
A continuous stream needs more than a working encoder at launch. A local computer can be interrupted by power or ISP failures, a router restart, a system update or a crash. A VPS removes the home power dependency but not provider incidents, network problems, resource limits or encoder errors. Neither hosting choice guarantees uninterrupted availability.
- Test whether the encoder and media playback recover after a restart or lost connection.
- Keep the stream key and configuration securely available to the people who need to restore service.
- Set up a routine for checking YouTube’s stream health, audio, picture and whether the public watch page is still available.
- For a VPS, confirm how to restart the instance or encoder remotely and how to detect a stopped process.
- For local OBS, check what happens after a power cut, router interruption or computer reboot, and whether someone can regain physical access.
- If using a backup encoder, test failover rather than assuming that a second encoder will take over correctly.
YouTube warns that a disruption in connectivity can break a stream. Its guidance recommends checking the Live Control Room preview, testing failover and continuously monitoring the audio and video. Those checks are useful for a 24/7 channel even when there is no scheduled event.

Do not assume a full replay from one 24-hour broadcast
YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not promise that a single uninterrupted broadcast lasting 24 hours or longer will produce one complete replay. If a complete replay matters, schedule or segment the stream, and test the current Live Control Room behavior and a separate archive workflow before relying on it. YouTube’s guidance does not establish exactly how every stream longer than 12 hours will be handled.

Clear rights for every part of the podcast
YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the provider to hold the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of live and archived content and to comply with applicable laws and territory requirements. Check rights for music, clips, recordings and guest contributions for both the live broadcast and any replay. The terms do not determine which registrations or licences apply to a particular podcast in India; that depends on the content and circumstances, so obtain appropriate local advice where needed.
Do not treat monetization as guaranteed income
For eligible channels, YouTube lists ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships as live monetization options. YouTube cautions that ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. A continuous broadcast does not itself establish that a channel will qualify for monetization or earn more.

Estimate the real cost before choosing
There is no established current price comparison for running OBS locally versus an India-region VPS. For a local machine, count the incremental electricity, any backup power, Internet service and hardware you would need to buy. For a VPS, include compute, bandwidth or egress charges, any GPU or remote desktop and the time required to administer it. Compare the full recurring cost against the operational burden you are willing to own, not just the advertised server price.
