If one video file stops in OBS, open the source’s Properties and enable Loop. For a playlist, use a VLC Video Source and enable Loop Playlist. First check whether playback loops inside OBS; if it does but the YouTube broadcast does not, diagnose the encoder output and stream connection as a separate problem.
Choose the loop setting for the source you are using
| Source type | Best fit | Setting to check | Dependency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One local audio or video file | Loop | No additional software requirement is stated in OBS’s documentation. |
| VLC Video Source | A playlist or media supported through VLC libraries | Loop Playlist | VLC must be installed. For 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies 64-bit VLC. |
OBS’s Media Sources documentation, published January 11, 2022, says the Media Source Loop property specifies whether the file plays again once playback has completed. OBS documents Loop as off by default for Media Source and Loop Playlist as on by default for VLC Video Source, so verify the actual setting rather than relying on its default.
Fix a single file that stops at the end
- In OBS, select the scene containing the video and select the relevant Media Source in the Sources list.
- Open the source’s Properties.
- Confirm that the file path points to the intended recording and that the file plays locally.
- Enable Loop, then apply the change and test playback in the OBS preview.
Loop repeats the file when it reaches the end. It is not the same as Restart playback when source becomes active, which controls whether playback starts again when the source becomes active and visible in the scene.
Fix a playlist that does not repeat
- Check that the source is a VLC Video Source, rather than a Media Source. OBS uses the VLC source for playlists.
- If VLC Video Source is missing, install VLC. Match its 64-bit version to 64-bit OBS, as OBS specifies.
- Open the VLC Video Source’s Properties and confirm the intended playlist is loaded.
- Enable Loop Playlist and test the playlist in OBS.
A single-file Media Source and a VLC playlist have different loop controls. Changing Loop on a Media Source will not substitute for Loop Playlist on a VLC Video Source.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check activation, visibility, and layering
If the file plays but does not restart as expected when you switch scenes or reveal the source, check Restart playback when source becomes active in its Properties. This controls activation; Loop controls what happens at the end of playback.
- Make sure the source is in the currently active scene and its eye icon shows it is visible.
- Check the source order. In OBS, a source higher in the list can cover a source below it; move the video above an obstructing source if appropriate.
- Show nothing when playback ends controls whether the source hides after the file finishes. It does not make the file loop.
- Close file when inactive unloads the file while the source is hidden. It may take a short time to reload when the source becomes visible again.
OBS documents these Media Source controls in its Media Sources guide and explains source ordering in its Sources guide.

Separate an OBS playback problem from a YouTube problem
- Test in OBS first. Watch the source through the end and confirm it repeats in the preview. If it fails there, stay focused on the source type, loop setting, visibility, file path, and local playback.
- Compare the encoder output with YouTube. If OBS appears correct, check the stream preview in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends previewing before an event and monitoring audio and video quality during it.
- Check stream health and errors. Live Control Room provides stream health and associated status or error information. Use it to tell whether YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
- Investigate the failing layer. If the encoder output itself looks or sounds wrong, check the sources routed to the encoder, encoder errors, CPU load, and any local archive. If encoder output appears healthy but the live output is problematic, check outbound connectivity.
YouTube’s guidance covers previewing and monitoring a live stream, stream health, and troubleshooting encoder issues. If viewers on different connections report the same issue, YouTube says an encoder issue may be involved. Do not start by changing encoder settings when the source already fails in OBS: first identify where the output stops matching expectations.
Address black video, lag, or an unresponsive source
If the source is black or cannot play before it reaches the stream, verify the selected file path and that the file itself plays. The OBS and YouTube guides cited here do not establish one universal codec fix for every file-specific failure, so do not assume a loop toggle will repair an unsupported or damaged file.

Performance adjustments are relevant when the symptoms suggest resource pressure, dropped frames, or a demanding scene—not as a first response to a file that simply stops at its end. OBS’s performance troubleshooting guide recommends simplifying complex scenes and reducing resolution or frame rate where needed. It advises using Media Source or VLC Source for media files. For encoder settings, consult YouTube’s current stream-health guidance and select settings for the resolution and frame rate in use; bitrate recommendations can depend on those choices.

If your goal is to keep uploaded documentary footage playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than troubleshoot a local OBS scene, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home; StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
