OBS Media Source Hardware Decoding: Should You Enable It for a 24/7 Stream?

For most 24/7 OBS streams, leave Media Source hardware decoding off unless a controlled test on your own PC shows smoother playback or useful CPU relief without GPU or stability problems.

Usually, leave “Use hardware decoding when available” off unless a controlled test on your streaming PC shows a real benefit. OBS lists the Media Source option as off by default. It can shift decoding of supported media files to a GPU with the right built-in decoder, but it is not the same as hardware encoding—and the available documentation does not establish that enabling it improves 24/7 reliability.

What the Media Source hardware-decoding setting does

In OBS, “Use hardware decoding when available” is a per-source option for a Media Source. When enabled, OBS can use a compatible GPU decoder for certain media file types. The OBS Project describes it as: “Sets the GPU to perform hardware decoding on certain file types if your GPU has the appropriate hardware decoder built-in.” The documented default is off. OBS Project: Media Sources

Media Source can play video files such as MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM, as well as audio such as MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. Those file extensions alone do not establish that hardware decoding is available: support depends on the codec and profile inside the file, the GPU decoder, drivers and operating system.

Decoding is also separate from encoding. Decoding turns the video file into frames OBS can use; encoding compresses the finished OBS output for transmission to YouTube or another destination. Changing this checkbox does not select a hardware encoder for the outgoing stream. OBS Project: Streaming Encoder Guides

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Should you enable it for a 24/7 stream?

Do not enable it just because the stream runs continuously, or assume that GPU decoding is automatically faster. FFmpeg cautions that hardware acceleration may have no effect when unsupported, and that some methods intended for playback may not outperform software decoding on modern CPUs. Moving frames between GPU and system memory can also add overhead. FFmpeg: Hardware Acceleration

OBS also uses the GPU to composite and render scenes. If rendering is already constrained, moving decoding onto the GPU might compete for resources rather than solve the problem. Assess the complete OBS workload, not CPU usage in isolation. OBS Project: Encoding Performance Troubleshooting

There is no universal 24/7 rule, published uptime comparison or failure-rate figure for this setting in the reviewed sources. A GitHub issue describes one HEVC SRT/RIST case that froze and crashed on exit with hardware decoding enabled; it does not show how common that behavior is or predict what will happen with local files, other codecs, hardware or software versions. How to decide on your own setup

  1. Identify the actual media format. Check the file’s video codec and profile, not just its extension. Confirm that the GPU, driver and operating system support decoding that format. OBS says hardware decoding applies only to certain file types and requires an appropriate built-in decoder. OBS Project: Media Sources
  2. Establish a baseline with decoding off. Use the same Media Source, scenes and output settings you intend to stream with. Note whether the file plays and loops correctly, along with CPU and GPU load, rendering or encoding issues, and relevant OBS log messages.
  3. Test with decoding on under the same workload. Compare playback continuity and loop behavior, CPU headroom, GPU decoder and rendering load, logs, and any rendering or encoding problems. Change only this option so the comparison is useful.
  4. Keep it enabled only if the result is better and remains stable. If CPU relief is useful and playback stays reliable without creating GPU or OBS problems, it may suit your system. Otherwise, turn it off. A short test can reveal obvious problems, but no single test duration is established as sufficient for every 24/7 setup.
  5. Recheck after material changes. A different source codec or profile, GPU, driver, operating system or OBS workload can change the result. Retest rather than carrying over an assumption from another machine.

This is a practical comparison, not a promise from OBS that either mode is more reliable. For continuous operation, judge the actual stream workload across codec support, CPU headroom, GPU decoding and rendering capacity, playback continuity, driver compatibility and logs. The reviewed sources provide no single benchmark that settles those factors for every system. OBS Project: Encoding Performance Troubleshooting

When this setting is not the problem

If playback is smooth but the outgoing stream has rendering or encoding problems, the checkbox may not address the bottleneck. Check OBS’s performance troubleshooting guidance and logs, and distinguish rendering lag from encoding lag before changing settings. Hardware decoding concerns how a source is decoded; it does not by itself fix output encoding or guarantee that a stream stays connected. OBS Project: Encoding Performance Troubleshooting
