You can loop local videos of different resolutions in one YouTube Live broadcast by giving OBS a fixed canvas and output resolution, then choosing how each clip fits that frame. Add the clips to an OBS VLC Video playlist, set the playlist to loop, and test the framing and stream before going public. YouTube transcodes the stream it receives for viewers; it does not make inconsistent source framing consistent for you.
1. Choose the broadcast frame in OBS
Decide the frame your finished broadcast should have before arranging clips. In OBS, open Settings → Video. Set Base (Canvas) Resolution for the production layout and Output (Scaled) Resolution for the stream you send to YouTube. The canvas is where OBS arranges sources; the output resolution sets the encoded stream dimensions. A common 16:9 example is 1920×1080, but choose a resolution that suits your intended quality and available upload bandwidth. OBS explains the distinction in its overview guide.
Keep those output dimensions fixed even when the source clips have different pixel dimensions. Resolution and aspect ratio are separate: clips with different resolutions may share the same proportions, while two clips of identical pixel dimensions may still need different framing.
2. Add the videos as a looping playlist
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS notes that you need 64-bit VLC.
- Add the source. In your OBS scene, add a VLC Video source and select the local clips in the order you want them to play.
- Set playlist behavior. Enable Loop Playlist and disable Shuffle Playlist if you want the videos to repeat in a predictable order. OBS documents these controls in its Media Sources guide.
- Check each item. Preview the playlist from beginning to end, including the transition from the final clip back to the first. Confirm that every file plays and that the framing works throughout.
For one repeating file rather than a playlist, OBS’s ordinary Media Source has its own Loop setting. That is a separate source and control, so use VLC Video for a multi-clip playlist and Media Source when a single file is all you need.

3. Choose how each clip fits the canvas
Different source proportions create a framing choice. Apply an appropriate transform to each playlist item and inspect it in the actual scene; a setting that suits one clip may cut off or distort another. OBS documents source transforms in its Sources guide and aspect-ratio guidance.
| Framing choice | What happens | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Fit to Screen | Preserves the complete image and its proportions. If the source and canvas aspect ratios differ, bars may remain. | Showing the entire frame matters more than filling every part of the canvas. |
| Crop to fill | Fills the canvas while removing some of the image at the edges. | Filling the frame matters and the cropped edges do not contain important content. |
| Stretch to Screen | Fills the canvas by changing the source’s proportions, which can warp the image. | Only when distortion is acceptable; OBS’s aspect-ratio guide generally advises against stretching. |
Prefer Fit to Screen or an intentional crop when preserving geometry matters. Check subjects, captions, credits and other edge details on every differently shaped clip. YouTube’s transcoding creates playback formats from the incoming stream, but it cannot restore cropped content or undo distorted framing.

4. Configure the YouTube stream output
Use a YouTube-supported ingest protocol and encoder configuration. YouTube’s current general guidance includes RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1; it recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding 4 seconds. Choose the codec and bitrate for your output resolution and frame rate using YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
For H.264, YouTube’s guidance accessed in 2026 lists 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are codec- and frame-rate-specific recommendations, not universal settings; consult the table for your chosen output and check it again before publishing because guidance can change. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth free beyond the stream bitrate, and accounting for a backup stream if you use one. Its streaming tips cover network preparation and testing.

In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream in Live Control Room and use its stream settings to get the stream key and configure the event. In OBS, enter the YouTube stream key in the service’s stream configuration; treat the key as a secret and do not show it in a recording or public screenshot. YouTube’s live stream settings guide describes the available controls. Do not assume that choosing a higher output resolution will improve a lower-resolution source: it enlarges the output frame, not the detail in the original video.
5. Test, then monitor the broadcast
- Preview the playlist in OBS and verify all clips are visible in the intended frame.
- Test representative moving footage and audio, including transitions, the first and last frames, and audio continuity.
- Start a test stream and check the preview and messages in YouTube Live Control Room before making the event public.
- After going live, monitor YouTube’s stream health and the audio and video quality. YouTube recommends testing before a live event and continuing to monitor it.
Copyright and channel suitability
Only stream videos and audio you have the rights or permission to use, and check that the material and presentation comply with YouTube’s rules. A live loop does not itself establish that reused material is permitted or suitable for monetization. For a practical pre-stream review, use StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist; it is a checklist, not a substitute for rights or legal advice.

Troubleshooting common problems
- Clips have bars: The clip’s aspect ratio differs from the canvas and Fit to Screen is preserving the whole image. Keep the bars, or crop intentionally if losing some edges is acceptable.
- People or objects look stretched: Stretch to Screen has changed the image geometry. Switch to Fit to Screen or use an intentional crop.
- Only one file plays, or the playlist will not load: Confirm you added a VLC Video source, selected the intended files, and installed VLC with the same architecture as OBS (64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS).
- The playlist stops instead of repeating: Check that Loop Playlist is enabled. For a single file using Media Source, check that source’s Loop setting instead.
- The order changes unexpectedly: Disable Shuffle Playlist if you need the selected order to repeat.
- The stream is unstable: Check YouTube’s stream health and the upload connection. Compare available upload bandwidth with the selected bitrate and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- The broadcast looks soft: Confirm the OBS output resolution and bitrate are appropriate for the source and frame rate. A larger output cannot add detail absent from the source clip.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping while your computer is off, StreamNeo runs the uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts.
