First identify the OBS source, then compare what happens in the OBS preview, a local recording, and the public YouTube stream. Check whether audio continues and whether OBS reports dropped frames or rendering and encoding trouble. Those observations point to different fixes; without them, the cause is still unknown.
First, identify what “media source” means in your OBS setup
In everyday use, “media source” can mean several different things. OBS treats these as distinct source types, and their playback controls and likely failure points differ.
- Media Source: Plays a local media file. Check whether playback reached the end before assuming it froze.
- VLC Video: Uses VLC libraries to play media. OBS requires VLC to be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, you need 64-bit VLC.
- Browser Source: Displays a webpage, such as a YouTube page. This is not the same playback path as a local Media Source.
- Video Capture Device: Receives input from a camera or capture device. If this is the failing source, investigate that input rather than local-file playback.
OBS Project’s “Media Sources” guide, dated January 11, 2022, documents the source types and their properties. Identify the exact source in your scene before changing settings.
Locate where the frame freezes
Compare three views: the OBS preview, a local recording made by OBS, and the public YouTube playback. Also note whether the audio continues while the picture is frozen. These checks help separate a source-playback problem from OBS rendering or encoding trouble, a connection issue, or a viewer-side playback problem. They do not prove a particular cause on their own.

- Frozen in OBS preview and local recording: Focus first on the source’s playback or the local OBS rendering and encoding path.
- Preview and local recording look normal, but YouTube freezes: Check OBS’s dropped-frame and connection indicators. If those are normal, viewer or platform playback conditions may still be relevant.
- Preview freezes but the local recording or YouTube stream does not: The issue may be limited to the preview; compare OBS performance indicators before changing the source.
- Audio continues: Record that detail. It helps distinguish a picture or rendering problem from a complete interruption, but does not identify the cause by itself.
Use the matching troubleshooting branch
If a local Media Source reached the end of its file
OBS documents that a local video can leave its last image visible after playback ends. Check whether the file actually finished and review the source’s playback properties, including whether restart-on-activation is configured. OBS also provides a “Show nothing when playback ends” option; its documented use is to prevent the last frame remaining visible after local video playback ends. This is relevant to completed local playback, not proof of a fix for a genuinely continuous YouTube stream.
“Close file when inactive” and hardware decoding are also Media Source controls documented by OBS. Treat either as a targeted test only when it fits the source and observed symptom, rather than as a universal fix.

If OBS reports dropped frames or disconnects
Check OBS’s dropped-frame count and whether the stream disconnects. OBS Project’s “Stream Connection Troubleshooting” guide, dated September 30, 2024, explains: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.” This points to the connection between OBS and the streaming ingest server, not necessarily to the media file.
- Compare the configured bitrate with the upload capacity your connection can sustain reliably.
- Try another streaming server or service where available.
- Check for VPN, security software, other network software, or network drivers that could interfere.
- If you use Wi-Fi and it is unstable, OBS recommends trying a wired connection.
- Dynamic bitrate can accommodate congestion, but it is not a root-cause repair and may reduce stream quality.
If OBS shows rendering or encoding trouble
OBS needs GPU resources to composite and render scenes. If OBS reports rendering or encoding problems, or preview stutters while GPU demand is high, reduce competing GPU work and simplify the scene or its sources. If needed, lower output resolution or frame rate. A frozen frame alone is not evidence that you need a GPU upgrade.

If OBS has no dropped frames but viewers report buffering
OBS’s “Stream Buffering Troubleshooting” guide distinguishes viewer buffering from OBS dropping frames: viewers can report buffering even when OBS is not dropping frames. Check the dropped-frame counter first. If it is not rising, consider differences in viewers’ connections and the platform’s playback recommendations rather than assuming the OBS source itself has stopped.
Record the evidence before escalating
If the cause is still unclear, collect the details that distinguish the branches before asking for help. OBS Project’s “OBS Studio Overview Guide” recommends including an OBS log when reporting problems.

- The source type and relevant source properties.
- Whether the freeze appears in preview, a local recording, YouTube playback, or more than one of these.
- Whether audio continues.
- OBS dropped-frame status and any rendering or encoding indicators.
- Whether a local file had reached its end, if you use a local Media Source.
- An OBS log and a concise description of what you observed.
