To balance looped videos in OBS, load each clip as its own Media Source, enable Loop in each source’s properties, then adjust each source’s Audio Mixer fader while listening and watching the meters. Separate sources give you separate volume controls; a single combined file does not.
Choose the right OBS source setup
One local video
Add the file as a Media Source and enable Loop in its properties. OBS replays the file when playback completes. The OBS Project’s Media Sources guide describes the source and its loop settings.
Several local videos with independent volume controls
Add each clip as its own Media Source and enable Loop for each. Give the sources descriptive names, such as “Opening,” “Interview,” or “Music,” so you can match each Audio Mixer meter and fader to the right clip. The fader controls that source’s output level; a combined file presented as one source has only one source-level fader.
A playlist of clips
Use OBS’s VLC Video source, add the playlist, and use Loop Playlist. OBS documents that looping is on by default for this source; VLC must be installed for VLC Video to be available. This differs from using a separate Media Source for each file.

Balance the clips in the Audio Mixer
- Start playback. Play representative sections of every clip, including the quietest and loudest passages. A clip’s level may vary within the file, so do not judge it from a single moment.
- Find each source’s mixer entry. The Audio Mixer shows a source name, meter, volume fader and controls including mute and monitoring. Confirm the source name before changing its fader.
- Adjust each fader by listening. Make small changes while comparing the clips. The mixer fader changes the output level of its source; it does not repair distortion or automatically equalize loud and quiet sections within the original recording.
- Watch the meters, but do not mix by appearance alone. OBS cautions that sounds that look equally loud on meters may sound louder to viewers. Its Audio Mixer guidance suggests speech reaching the lower end of red and sitting in the upper yellow range, gameplay or similar content lower in yellow, and background music and alert effects in green. These are qualitative meter-placement suggestions, not a universal mastering target or a YouTube loudness specification. OBS notes that red is near clipping and clipping causes distortion. - Monitor, record, and listen back. Use Audio Monitoring in Advanced Audio Properties to hear the signal reaching OBS, then make a test recording and listen to it before publishing. Monitoring helps assess the captured signal; the recording check catches problems you might miss while watching meters.
When the video audio comes from another application
If the clips are playing in a browser or another application instead of being loaded as local Media Sources, the capture route is different. OBS documents Application Audio Capture for Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11. OBS Studio 30.1 can also include audio with Window Capture or Game Capture. These are Windows-specific options, not general cross-platform steps.
When using separate Application Audio Capture sources, OBS recommends disabling global Desktop Audio if capturing both causes echo. For incompatible application audio, OBS describes virtual-cable routing as an optional workaround and names VB-Cable in its Application Audio Capture Guide. A virtual cable is not needed for local Media Sources.

Understand tracks, channels, and what reaches YouTube
Tracks are for separate recordings, not separate live faders
Assigning audio to multiple recording tracks does not create a separate live volume fader for each clip. Tracks are useful when you plan to edit afterward, but ordinary video players play only one track at a time. For a recording going directly to YouTube without editing, OBS recommends putting all required sources on track 1. If you want isolated tracks for editing, assign and enable them deliberately, then verify the intended audio in your editor and exported file. Check the signal path and channel behavior
Where audio comes from a device or application, start by checking its output level, then adjust the OBS fader. OBS defaults to stereo and downmixes surround audio to stereo unless configured otherwise. Check mono/stereo behavior if a source sounds different in the mix than it does on its own.

Troubleshooting uneven or missing audio
- One clip is much louder: Confirm that you are moving the fader for that clip’s source. Lower that source and compare again by listening; a meter reading alone does not establish perceived loudness.
- Changing one fader affects all clips: The clips are likely combined into one media source. For independent adjustments, use separate sources or alter the clips in an editor before importing.
- The loop stops after one clip: For a single Media Source, check its Loop property. For a playlist, check Loop Playlist on VLC Video and confirm VLC is installed.
- You hear an echo from an application: Check whether the same audio is captured through both an application-specific source and Desktop Audio. OBS recommends disabling global Desktop Audio when separate Application Audio Capture sources would otherwise duplicate it.
- The meter looks acceptable but the result sounds distorted: Red indicates a level near clipping in OBS’s guidance. Reduce the source level and listen to a fresh recording; meter color is a warning aid, not a substitute for playback.
- A direct upload has no expected audio: Check that the audio is on track 1 for ordinary player compatibility, or verify the correct track in the editor and exported file if you recorded isolated tracks.
