First find out where the picture freezes: in OBS’s preview, in a local recording, or only on YouTube. If OBS or the recording is frozen, troubleshoot the Media Source and OBS performance. If both are healthy but YouTube is not, check Live Control Room stream health and the outbound connection. These paths can point to different causes, so changing bitrate or network settings before comparing them may send you in the wrong direction.
1. Check whether the Media Source is set to loop
In OBS, select the local video in the Sources list and open its properties. Check Loop if the file should restart when it reaches the end. OBS describes this as replaying the file once playback completes. This setting handles end-of-file playback; it does not explain a freeze in the middle of a clip. OBS Media Sources documentation
Check Restart playback when source becomes active separately. It controls whether playback starts over when the source becomes active in a visible scene; it is not the same as looping continuously. If the source is hidden or removed from the active scene between segments, also inspect Close file when inactive, which unloads the file when the source is inactive. Show nothing when playback ends affects what is shown after playback finishes; it does not enable looping.
- Freezes at the end of the file: verify Loop.
- Does not start over after a scene change: check Restart playback when source becomes active and whether the source becomes active as expected.
- Fails after being hidden or inactive: inspect Close file when inactive and reproduce the behavior with the same scene changes.
- Freezes mid-file: Loop may not be relevant; continue with the source and performance checks below.
2. Test the media source without changing several things at once
If the file still hangs, note the current settings, then change one setting at a time and test outside a critical broadcast. In the Media Source properties, Hardware decoding is an optional setting and is off by default in OBS’s documented properties. Try switching it on or off as a controlled comparison, observe playback on the affected system, and revert if stability gets worse. It is not a universal fix.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OBS supports a range of media file extensions, but its documentation does not prescribe one conversion or codec that resolves every freeze. A VLC Video Source can also be tested as a comparison for a file or playlist; it is available in OBS only when VLC is installed. Neither a format conversion nor switching source type is guaranteed to fix the problem. OBS Media Sources documentation
3. Find out whether OBS is falling behind
Compare the OBS preview with a local recording of the same segment, if available. A freeze in the preview or recording points toward the local source, rendering, or encoding path; if both look normal while YouTube is bad, investigate the stream and connection instead. This comparison is a practical diagnostic, not a guarantee that every setup will behave identically.

OBS uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes. If OBS shows signs of rendering or encoding strain, or other evidence suggests that the system is overloaded, try reducing scene load before changing network settings. OBS’s performance guidance recommends reducing rendering demands; apply these changes one at a time so you can tell what affects the symptom. OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting
- Simplify scenes and limit expensive sources that are not needed for the broadcast.
- Use media sized appropriately for the stream output rather than needlessly large source files.
- Close other GPU-intensive applications that you know are safe to close.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator as a quick check when GPU overload is suspected. This is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed cure.
4. Compare OBS output with YouTube stream health
Look at the stream directly in OBS and compare it with YouTube’s preview and stream-health status. YouTube recommends checking the encoder output, encoder errors, CPU load, and local archive. If the video or audio is already poor in the encoder, inspect the sources routed to it. If the encoder output and local archive are healthy, test the outbound internet connection instead. Read the messages in YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide and Live Control Room metrics guidance.

Do not treat a locally frozen Media Source as proof that your upload speed is too low. YouTube’s connection advice becomes relevant when OBS and the local archive are healthy but the stream delivered to YouTube is not. OBS also documents separate stream connection troubleshooting.
5. Check the preflight and encoder settings only when they fit the evidence
Before going live, test with representative video motion and audio, inspect the Live Control Room preview, and monitor stream health during the event. YouTube’s streaming tips advise leaving upload headroom; the reviewed page recommends 20% headroom, with no publication year stated on that page. This is a connection-planning recommendation, not a fix for a file that is already frozen in OBS. YouTube streaming tips and YouTube encoder settings

If the evidence points to a separate encoder-settings issue, YouTube’s reviewed table lists 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps using AV1 or H.265 and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps using H.264. These are YouTube ingest recommendations for the stated codecs, resolution, and frame rate—not remedies for a locally frozen source. The reviewed page does not state a publication year, and platform recommendations can change; check the current encoder guide for the applicable settings before adjusting your stream.

| What you see | What it suggests | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| The clip stops at its end | Looping may be disabled. | Enable Loop in the Media Source properties and test playback. |
| The clip freezes mid-file in OBS and in the recording | The issue is likely in the local source, rendering, or encoding path. | Check source properties, test hardware decoding as an A/B change, and look for OBS performance strain. |
| The source fails after a scene change or being hidden | Source activation or inactivity behavior may be involved. | Check Restart playback when source becomes active and Close file when inactive; reproduce the same scene sequence. |
| OBS preview and local recording look normal, but YouTube is bad | The fault may be downstream of local playback, such as stream health or connection. | Inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages, OBS encoder output, and outbound connection. |
| OBS reports rendering or encoding strain | OBS may not have enough available resources to keep up. | Simplify scenes, reduce unnecessary source load, close safe-to-close GPU-intensive apps, and on Windows test running OBS as administrator. |
7. When a recurring report may not match your setup
A reported OBS GitHub issue from June 2026 describes YouTube playback freezing under Window or Display Capture after a resize or focus change on a particular Windows 11 system. That report concerns capturing browser playback, not necessarily a local Media Source file, so browser graphics-flag workarounds should not be treated as a general solution to this problem. An older OBS GitHub issue describes a looped Media Source unloading after inactivity in a particular configuration involving a hidden or disabled source and Close file when inactive. It is a scoped user report, not confirmation of a current universal bug. Consider it only if the freeze reliably follows source inactivity, and reproduce the behavior while checking the documented properties. OBS issue #3192
