To find why a 24/7 YouTube stream failed, analyze the OBS log from the session in which the failure occurred, then compare its timestamps and clues with OBS Statistics and YouTube Live Control Room stream health. A log from a different session cannot establish the cause, and without the affected log and matching platform evidence, the specific cause remains unknown.
1. Get the log from the affected OBS session
- In OBS, open Help → Log Files → Upload Last Log File for a completed session. If the affected session is still open, choose Upload Current Log File.
- Confirm that the failure happened during the session represented by that log. If it did not, capture the correct session instead.
- Use the OBS Log Analyzer linked from the OBS support instructions: OBS Log Analyzer. It reviews logs for common issues and suggestions.
Keep the log URL and note the failure time. Treat analyzer flags as leads to verify against the log, your symptoms, and the platform’s evidence—not as proof of a root cause.
2. Compare the failure across OBS, YouTube, and playback
Use the evidence from the same time window. A stream can fail at the computer, on the network path to YouTube, at ingest, or in viewer playback; those are related but distinct observations.
- OBS output: Check the log around the failure and OBS Statistics for dropped frames and rendering or encoding indicators. Dropped frames point toward a connection that is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Render or encoding trouble points to a separate local performance branch.
- YouTube ingest: In YouTube Live Control Room, inspect stream-health messages at the matching time. Compare the encoder settings with YouTube’s guidance for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Viewer playback and archive: Check the public playback page and whether the local archive is growing. OBS output alone does not establish what viewers received.
OBS’s guidance says, within the specific context of dropped frames, “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” That does not rule out a crash, encoder overload, or another kind of failure. 3. Follow the clue that matches the evidence
Dropped frames or intermittent disconnects
Prioritize the connection from your computer to the streaming ingest: compare configured bitrate with stable upload capacity, test another ingest server, and check whether VPN or security software may be interfering. OBS identifies an unstable connection or one unable to keep up with the set bitrate as the general dropped-frames issue; a counter by itself does not prove whether the cause is your local network, ISP, route, or ingest server.
YouTube stream-health warning
Use the specific Live Control Room message rather than treating all warnings as network faults. YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS, CBR, H.264, H.265, or AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For one specific example, YouTube Help lists 1080p at 60 fps with H.264 at a minimum of 6 Mbps and a recommended 17 Mbps; this is guidance for that configuration, not a universal 24/7-stream setting. Rendering or encoding indicators rise
Inspect the OBS performance indicators and log around the failure. A demonstrated rendering or encoding bottleneck calls for investigating the local setup; changing an ingest server or lowering network bitrate will not fix a proven local bottleneck. The affected log and system and configuration details are needed before assigning a specific cause.
Invalid stream key or destination
If OBS or YouTube reports an invalid key or destination, check the configured YouTube URL and stream key in Studio. YouTube describes the stream key as the information that tells the encoder where to send the feed so YouTube can accept it. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio. OBS says it is live, but viewers see a broken stream
Check the YouTube playback page and local archive as well as OBS’s output. YouTube advises monitoring audio and video and checking that the local archive is growing. These checks help distinguish a delivery or playback problem from a failure to produce an encoder output. See YouTube streaming tips.
4. Change one plausible cause, then verify
- Write down the evidence that supports the suspected branch: the relevant log lines and time, OBS counters, YouTube health message, and playback or archive result.
- Change one plausible variable at a time. For a network clue, try another ingest server or lower the video bitrate to a level your stable upload can sustain.
- Leave bandwidth headroom. YouTube Help recommends 20%; it says the primary stream, backup streams, and that margin together should fit within available upload bandwidth.
- Reproduce the affected workload, then compare the new session’s log, OBS counters, YouTube stream health, and archive status with the original.
YouTube’s advice is to test the stream and monitor its health during the event: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” Its bandwidth guidance says: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available. Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” These are YouTube Help recommendations, not an independent diagnosis of your connection.

5. Keep continuous-stream requirements in view
A 24/7 stream needs the same evidence-led troubleshooting as any other stream, but the affected session must capture the problem. Make sure the log, OBS Statistics, YouTube stream health, and archive checks line up by time. For a YouTube stream, also check that the video and audio are yours to use or properly licensed and that the channel complies with YouTube’s rules; a technically healthy stream does not establish that its content is permitted.
