A crash is not the same as dropped frames or a lost connection to YouTube: those symptoms point to different problems. The exact cause cannot be identified without your OBS version, operating system, source type, and crash log.
Start by identifying the crash
Write down your OBS version and operating system, whether the playlist is local or network-based, which source type you use, and any filters attached to that source. Note what action triggers the crash: opening the source properties, loading the playlist, closing the properties dialog, or changing tracks. Preserve the crash report and regular OBS log if available; they can help support identify the fault.
OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide addresses dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as network problems between your computer and the remote ingest server. If OBS itself closes while loading a playlist, start with local sources, media, filters, and system conditions instead of changing YouTube stream settings.
Isolate playlist files and source filters
- Make a copy of your scene collection. Run tests in the copy so you can restore the original setup.
- Reduce the playlist to a few known-good files. Test each file individually, then add the others back in small groups. If the crash returns, test the files in that group one at a time.
- Remove invalid or suspect entries. An individual OBS issue report described a crash after an invalid file was added to a VLC playlist and the properties dialog was closed. That historical report suggests a useful test, but does not establish the cause of other crashes. See the OBS issue report.
- Check for a Video Delay (Async) filter. If you use an OBS VLC Video Source with this filter, temporarily remove it and test track changes. A separate historical OBS issue report described a crash while changing VLC playlist tracks with the filter applied; it is not proof that current versions have the same problem. The cited issue reports are individual cases, not prevalence data. Use them to guide controlled tests, not to assume that every VLC playlist crash has the same cause.

Test with a simpler scene
In the copied scene collection, temporarily disable or remove sources you do not need for the test, then try the smaller playlist again. OBS notes that sources consume resources even when they are not visible, and recommends limiting expensive sources and keeping scene collections focused in its encoding performance troubleshooting guide. This is a reasonable way to reduce resource pressure while isolating a failure; the guidance does not prove that resource use caused a particular crash.
If the crash occurs only in a gaming scene, also test with overlays and FPS counters disabled. OBS lists these among software that can conflict with game capture, but that guidance does not establish them as causes of playlist-loading crashes. See OBS’s game capture troubleshooting guidance.

Use the result to choose your next step
- A single file triggers the crash: exclude that entry from the playlist and test the remaining files. The available evidence does not identify a universal repair for a problematic media file.
- The VLC source crashes only with the filter enabled: leave the Video Delay (Async) filter off for a controlled retest. If that resolves the issue, preserve the crash report and log before changing the scene further.
- A smaller scene works but the full scene crashes: restore sources gradually to find what changes the result. Keep the test scene focused while isolating it.
- The crash persists in a minimal scene and with a short, known-good playlist: save the crash report and regular log, record your OBS and operating system versions, and ask for help through OBS’s official support channels. Without those details, the exact fault cannot be inferred.
