If an audio device disappears during a long YouTube stream, first check whether Windows still detects it. If it is missing from Windows, investigate device detection, the connection and the driver. If Windows sees it but OBS does not, check OBS’s selected source and audio configuration. If OBS still shows audio but YouTube playback is silent, troubleshoot playback separately.
First, identify where the audio disappears
When the problem happens, check Windows’ sound settings and Device Manager before changing OBS settings. Note the device model, Windows and OBS versions, connection type, how long the stream had been running, and whether the device is absent from Windows or only missing or silent in OBS. This helps distinguish a system-level detection problem from an OBS source-configuration issue.
- Missing from Windows: Start with Windows device detection, the connection and the manufacturer’s driver.
- Present in Windows, missing or silent in OBS: Check OBS’s source selection and audio settings.
- Audio meters appear to work, but YouTube playback is silent: Check playback volume and device sound settings.
- Dropped frames or a stream disconnection: Investigate the network separately; that symptom does not explain a locally missing audio device.
If Windows no longer detects the device
For a missing Windows audio output device, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking Device Manager and the driver. These are recovery steps, not a guarantee that a particular device will return.
- Open Device Manager. Expand Sound, video and game controllers. If the device is listed but disabled, enable it if that option is available.
- Check for hidden or newly detected hardware. In Device Manager, show hidden devices, then scan for hardware changes. If the device appears, check its status and whether Windows reports a problem.
- Check the connection. Confirm the device is connected and powered as applicable. If it is USB, reconnect it and see whether Windows detects it. A connection check is a diagnostic step, not proof that a cable or port is faulty.
- Install the manufacturer’s current driver. Use the PC or audio-device manufacturer’s support site and select the driver for your Windows version. Avoid assuming a generic driver or an update for another Windows version is appropriate.
- Run the Windows audio troubleshooter and restart. Microsoft includes both in its suggested recovery steps. After restarting, confirm Windows detects the device before reopening OBS.
If Windows sees the device but OBS does not
OBS can capture audio through a scene-specific source or through a device selected globally. Its Audio Sources documentation explains these arrangements; it does not prescribe a universal hot-reconnect procedure for a device that vanishes during a stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Check the scene’s source. In the scene being streamed, inspect the relevant Audio Input Capture or Audio Output Capture source and confirm it is set to the intended device. If the source is missing, add the appropriate capture source and select the device Windows currently detects.
- Check global audio devices. Open Settings > Audio and review the configured devices. Make sure the relevant global device has not been set to a different or unavailable device.
- Avoid capturing the same device twice. OBS warns that using the same device as both a scene source and a global device can cause echo. If you use scene-specific sources, disable the corresponding global device where appropriate.
- Test the corrected setup before the next long stream. Confirm the intended source is active in OBS and that its audio meter responds to sound. A brief test can reveal a source-selection issue, though it cannot establish why a device disappeared earlier.
If YouTube playback is silent
When audio appears to be present in OBS but the video is silent on YouTube, check the browser or device volume, the device’s sound settings, and whether restarting the browser or device restores playback. These are the checks in YouTube’s no-sound guidance; they do not diagnose an audio device missing from OBS or Windows.
Keep network symptoms separate
OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide treats dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Use that guidance if OBS reports dropped frames or the stream disconnects. Changing bitrate without evidence of a network problem is not a device-detection fix.

USB cutouts: test cautiously
An OBS forum discussion describes audio cutouts during streaming and includes user suggestions involving USB power and driver settings. That is anecdotal community experience, not confirmation of a general OBS bug or a proven fix. If the device is USB-connected and the symptoms match, check the current instructions from the device or PC manufacturer before changing power-management settings. Record the existing settings so you can restore them if the test makes no difference.
