The Friday, September 27, 2024, NYT Strands puzzle (#208) has a medieval architecture theme. Its spangram is CASTLE, and the seven theme words are WALL, MOAT, COURTYARD, DRAWBRIDGE, KEEP, TOWER and TURRET. Spoilers follow.
Hints for the September 27 Strands puzzle
The official hint reported for this puzzle was “Medieval marvel.” Forbes offered the additional hint “Man the catapults!” These clues point to a fortified structure and features associated with it.
Spangram and answers
The spangram is CASTLE. The theme words are:
- WALL
- MOAT
- COURTYARD
- DRAWBRIDGE
- KEEP
- TOWER
- TURRET
The set moves from defensive features such as a wall and moat to structures within or around a castle, including the courtyard, keep, tower and turret.
How Strands works
In its 2024 guide, Forbes described Strands as a word-search-style puzzle played on a six-by-eight letter grid. Players trace words connected by a shared theme; theme words are highlighted in blue and the spangram in yellow. The spangram expresses the connection among the theme words and runs between opposite sides of the board. These are mechanics as described in that 2024 guide, not a fresh confirmation of current official rules.

Forbes attributes this explanation of possible themes to The New York Times: “Some themes are fill-in-the-blank phrases. They may also be steps in a process, items that all belong to the same category, synonyms or homophones.” The source identifies Tracy Bennett as the Wordle and Strands editor and notes that she plans occasional curveballs; it does not attribute that quoted description directly to Bennett.
