It includes interviews with Lyle and Erik Menendez, their cousin Diane Vander Molen, and prosecutor Pamela Bozanich. It is a documentary film, not a docuseries—and it offers another perspective rather than settling every disputed question.
What is The Menendez Brothers about?
The documentary revisits the killings of José and Kitty Menendez and the trials that followed, with Lyle and Erik speaking about the crime and their case. Its first-person interviews make it a useful companion to Netflix’s scripted drama, especially for viewers who want to hear the brothers describe events in their own words.

Other participants include cousin Diane Vander Molen and prosecutor Pamela Bozanich. Their presence gives the film more than one point of view, but an interview is still a participant’s account—not, by itself, proof that a contested detail has been established.

How is the documentary different from Monsters?
| Netflix title | Format | What it offers |
|---|---|---|
| The Menendez Brothers | 2024 documentary film | Interviews, including new interviews with Lyle and Erik, alongside accounts from cousin Diane Vander Molen and prosecutor Pamela Bozanich. |
| Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story | Scripted series | A dramatization of the case and its competing explanations. Its scenes are storytelling, not evidence of what happened. |
Netflix describes Monsters as fictional and scripted, while noting that it drew on research, theories, and court testimony. The series’ finale is deliberately ambiguous. That artistic choice is one reason the documentary can be a valuable follow-up—but neither production should be treated as a final adjudication of disputed facts.
What happened in the Menendez case?
José and Kitty Menendez were killed in Beverly Hills in 1989. The brothers’ first trial began in July 1993, with a separate jury for each defendant. Prosecutors argued that they killed their parents for financial gain. The defense did not dispute that the brothers killed their parents; it argued they acted in self-defense after years of emotional and sexual abuse by their father. Both juries deadlocked in January 1994.

The retrial began in October 1995 before one jury. Much of the defense evidence concerning alleged sexual abuse was excluded. The jury convicted both brothers of first-degree murder in March 1996, and they were sentenced to life without parole in July 1996. These dates are reported in the Associated Press case timeline.
The competing accounts should remain attributed: financial motive was the prosecution’s argument; fear after alleged abuse was the brothers’ explanation. Netflix’s synopses frame the dispute, but they are not independent findings about which account is true.

Will the Menendez brothers be released from prison?
The latest dated status established here is Netflix Tudum’s report of August 25, 2025—not a confirmation of their status today. Tudum reported that Erik was denied release at a hearing on August 21 and Lyle was denied parole the following day. It said they would next be eligible in three years. The report also said a separate petition filed by their attorneys, challenging their detention and seeking a new trial, was still pending in Los Angeles court at that time. Those proceedings can change, so a report dated August 2025 should not be read as a current ruling in 2026.

-
Watch The Menendez Brothers for the documentary interviews and the participants’ accounts.
Rank #4
-
Keep the trial sequence in view: the first trial ended with deadlocked juries; the retrial ended in convictions and life-without-parole sentences.
-
When comparing it with Monsters, distinguish interview testimony and historical reporting from scripted scenes and dramatic choices.
