The Thursday, July 25, 2024, NYT Strands puzzle uses the official theme hint “All that jazz.” Its spangram is SUBGENRE, and the eight theme answers are FUSION, ACID, COOL, RAGTIME, MODAL, SWING, FUNK and BEBOP. The separate hint “No instruments” came from Forbes’s guide author, not from the New York Times.

The New York Times’ reported theme hint is “All that jazz.” Forbes added “No instruments” as an unofficial nudge. That extra line points solvers toward styles and categories rather than things played on stage. Forbes’s July 24, 2024 answer guide identifies the puzzle as Thursday, July 25.

These are the words selected for this board, not a complete taxonomy of jazz. Forbes notes that MUSIC did not count as a theme answer in this puzzle.
How the Strands board works
Forbes describes Strands as a word-search puzzle on a six-by-eight grid. Find theme words by connecting letters; each discovered theme word is highlighted blue. The spangram names the shared idea, runs from one side of the grid to the opposite side, and is highlighted yellow. A separate answer guide also identifies this as game 144 and reports the same spangram and answer set: TechRadar via Inkl’s guide.
