Herbstreit described Ben as his closest companion; two days later, College GameDay aired a separate tribute to the dog.
What happened to Kirk Herbstreit’s dog?
Ben was 10 years old, according to The Washington Post. Herbstreit said the cancer had spread throughout Ben’s organs and there was nothing more they could do. Ben had become a familiar presence to football viewers through appearances on College GameDay and, at times, in the broadcast booth. He also traveled with Herbstreit for work.

What Herbstreit said in his tribute
In his November 7 social-media announcement, Herbstreit wrote that he had had dogs throughout his life, “but Ben was 1 on 1.” He described Ben as “smart-loving-gentle-patient-inquisitive-and welcoming to all,” adding that the two understood one another and had each other’s backs. He said Ben had been with him more than anyone at home and while traveling for work. The Washington Post reproduced the statement and reported on the close bond between them.
Ben’s illness and the November announcement
The Washington Post reported that Ben was diagnosed with lymphoma and leukemia in March 2024. In July, he underwent surgery to remove cancerous masses from his spleen and intestine. Herbstreit later described Ben’s condition worsening before announcing his death on November 7. These details describe Ben’s reported illness and are not veterinary guidance.

College GameDay’s tribute to Ben
The personal announcement and the television tribute were separate events. College GameDay aired a segment honoring Ben on November 9, according to Sporting News. Afterward, Herbstreit thanked people for their support, writing, “He wasn’t just my best friend – he was America’s best friend.”
