Entries that may trip solvers
The Forbes commentary points to two kinds of answer. WARIO is a video-game reference: the clue describes the character by his yellow hat and purple overalls, so it is best recognized through Nintendo’s Mario series rather than by wordplay. ANODE and TOES are described as less immediately obvious. Those are the guide author’s observations about how the entries read, not measured difficulty ratings.

What a Mini looks like
The Mini is the short form of the New York Times daily crossword. The Forbes guide describes most weekday Minis as a five-by-five grid with three to five clues in each direction, with larger puzzles on some days, especially Saturdays. Paul Tassi, a Forbes senior contributor and the guide’s author, characterized the Mini this way: “The NYT Mini is a quick and dirty version of the newspaper’s larger and long-running crossword.” That is his description, not an official New York Times statement.

The guide says the Mini can be played on the New York Times website or app, and that older puzzles in the archive require an NYT Games subscription. That is how access worked as of August 2024. Subscription terms and archive rules change, so confirm current access in NYT Games before relying on it.
