The two starred across answers, LAB and CHOW, point to the theme answer DOG DAYS.
Which puzzle this is
This page covers the Mini for Tuesday, August 12, 2025. It is not the Wednesday, August 12, 2026 puzzle, which falls on a different weekday and has its own grid. Because the date is in the past, the answers below are for the archived 2025 puzzle.
Across answers
| No. | Clue | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | “Workplace for scientists” | LAB |
| 4 | “Grub” | CHOW |
| 6 | “Maliciously revealed one’s private identity, informally” | DOXED |
| 8 | “Spanish ‘but’” | PERO |
| 9 | “Gasoline type: Abbr.” | REG |
Down answers
| No. | Clue | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | “TV screen option, for short” | LCD |
| 2 | “___, a skip and a jump” | AHOP |
| 3 | “Someone who’s always taking jabs at you?” | BOXER |
| 5 | “Used to be” | WERE |
| 7 | “___ days (time of summer suggested by the answers to the starred clues)” | DOG |
How the theme works
The Down 7 clue tells you the theme is a time of summer and that the starred Across answers hint at it. The two starred entries, LAB and CHOW, lead to the completed phrase DOG DAYS. Once you have LAB and CHOW, the Down 7 entry DOG is the only word that fits the blank, which makes it a useful place to confirm your grid.
Solving notes
- BOXER is a playful answer. The clue describes a person who is always “taking jabs,” which is a boxing pun rather than a literal jab.
- DOXED is informal slang, so it may be unfamiliar to some solvers. The clue spells out the meaning: publicly revealing someone’s private identity with malicious intent.
- PERO is the Spanish word for “but,” so it fits a Spanish-language clue even for solvers who do not read Spanish.
