Why the groups can be easy to mix up
All 16 entries are title-like, which can tempt solvers to search for one shared film-related theme. The intended connections instead rely on different parts of the titles: New York City place names, rhyming title endings, measurement units at the end, and animal names at the start. In the measurement group, the final words are inch, foot, mile, and yard; in the animal group, the opening words point to a beetle, dog, fox, and octopus.

How NYT Connections works
The New York Times Help Center describes Connections as a puzzle in which players sort 16 words into four groups of four, with each group sharing a connection. Yellow is the easiest category and purple the trickiest. The Help Center also notes that words can seem to fit multiple categories even though each puzzle has exactly one solution: “Each puzzle has exactly one solution and is meant to be tricky by having words that could fit into multiple categories.” The game releases at midnight in the player’s timezone and is free to play on NYT platforms. The NYT Help Center says the Connections archive goes back to June 12, 2023, and archive access is for All Access and Games subscribers.
