It reports four hints and category labels, but its published word groups do not match those labels. The date and puzzle number also conflict: the guide calls the puzzle #389, not #24. Here is what that guide says—and what cannot be confirmed from it.
What can be confirmed about October 17?
A Yahoo Sports page carrying a Parade article dated Friday, October 17, 2025 describes that day’s Connections: Sports Edition puzzle as #389. The title for this guide identifies puzzle #24. The available information does not establish that these numbers refer to the same puzzle, so the #389 page cannot verify an answer key for #24.
The page describes the game as a daily puzzle in which players group 16 words into four sets of four. It says the Sports Edition is a partnership between The New York Times and The Athletic, and attributes this instruction to the NYT site: “group sports terms that share a common thread.” Read the Yahoo Sports page carrying the Parade article.
Hints and category labels reported by the article
The article reports these hints and labels for October 17, 2025. They are presented here as reported, not as independently verified clues for puzzle #24.
#1 Best Overall
| Hint | Category label reported |
|---|---|
| “Say uncle!” | Give up |
| “Layup is another one.” | Shots in basketball |
| “You wear it on your head.” | Parts of a hat |
| “Jack and Jill went up this.” | ____ hill |
Why the answer groups should not be treated as verified
The same article lists these groups: APPLAUSE, CLAPPING, HAND, OVATION under “Give up”; GLOVES, HELMET, SKATES, STICK under “Shots in basketball”; GRAF, KEYS, OSAKA, PIERCE under “Parts of a hat”; and BRUSH, STEP, TAIL, TOUCH under “____ hill.” Those combinations do not substantiate the category labels as presented. The article therefore does not provide a dependable, validated solution set.
No official NYT puzzle result or primary puzzle board is available in the cited account to resolve the mismatch. It would be misleading to present those groups as the confirmed answers for either #24 or the October 17 puzzle.

How to use the clues without spoiling an unverified puzzle
If you are solving the October 17 game, treat the reported hints as tentative prompts rather than a confirmed answer path. The four labels can suggest broad themes—conceding, basketball shots, hat parts, and a phrase ending in “hill”—but the article’s listed word groups do not reliably connect those themes. Check the puzzle number and date shown in your own game before relying on an answer guide.
