Yellow — QUALITIES OF A RAINY DAY
COLD, GRAY, WET, WINDY.
Green — SQUARELY
DEAD, EXACTLY, RIGHT, SMACK. Each can describe being directly or precisely on target: dead on, exactly right, or smack in the middle.
Blue — CONTENTS OF A POD
ASTRONAUT, COFFEE, PEA, WHALE. Think of a space capsule, a coffee pod, a pea pod, and a pod of whales.
Rank #2
Purple — BODY PART PLUS A STARTING LETTER
BARM, LEAR, RANKLE, SHIP. Add a letter at the beginning of a body-part word: B + arm, L + ear, R + ankle, and S + hip.
How the groups fit together
The Yellow set is the most literal: cold, gray, wet, and windy can all describe rainy weather. Green hinges on the sense of “squarely” as directly or precisely, rather than on the physical shape. Blue uses several meanings of “pod,” while Purple builds each answer by placing one extra letter before a body-part word.

How NYT Connections works
Connections presents 16 words and asks players to sort them into four groups of four that share a theme. The groups are color-coded Yellow, Green, Blue, and Purple, from easiest to trickiest. Some words can seem to belong to more than one category, so the challenge is identifying the intended shared connection. The New York Times Help Center says the game releases at midnight in the player’s local timezone and can be played through the Games app, the Connections website, nytimes.com/theathletic, and the News app. Its Connections help page also explains that the official archive is available to All Access and Games subscribers, while the Connections Bot is available to All Access, Home Delivery, and Games subscribers.
